One of the first things I learned was that almost all field welding in construction is done with low hydrogen welding rod. So whenever I weld, I almost always use 7018 rod. It was different when I worked in a steel fabrication shop making handrails. There was no such requirement on handrails because they were not considered structural steel, so I used a MIG wirefeed welder. Then I started working on farm equipment. I use quite a bit of 6011 rod on farm equipment because it was made specifically for welding on rusty or dirty steel. That is about all I need to know about AWS D1.4 because whenever I am in doubt, I just use 7018 rod. I know this may seem wrong to you, but it works for me.

And so you do not maintain any AWS certification as a welder. And so when the AWS establishes a set of standards about welding, this means nothing to you, because you’re just going to do what you do anyway, without certification. This perhaps is why you thought standards are what people do out of habit or convenience. My wife does something like this now and again. She calls it a hobby. She can’t do it for a real living because to do it for a living she’d need to follow standards and be certified. Still, some people pay her a little money because they don’t need certified-quality work. So I understand very well what you do. You live in a trailer on someone else’s farm, you own a truck you can’t drive on the road because you don’t have a license, and you collect Social Security and sometimes weld as a hobby. And quite a lot of the time, you post on the internet about a subject you know practically nothing about. And just in case you might leap to wrong conclusions, this does not make me unhappy in the slightest. After all, it’s your life to squander. I just am interested in characterizing it succinctly. > I just started welding one day. And quite a lot of the time, you post on the internet about a > subject you know practically nothing about. > Well, what you are really saying is that I know practically nothing about welding. People bring things to me to weld, and I weld for them. If they didn't bring the stuff to weld, I would not be welding it. Back when I was welding full time, I had no trouble finding work because I could weld better than most welders. The thing about welding that you do not seem to understand is that you cannot fake it the way scientists do with science. A weld either holds, or the person comes back with a complaint about it. I have not had any complaints for a long time. When I first moved to this farm, I was welding on farm equipment almost every day because the farmer was such a bad welder. Now I go a month at a time without welding on any of his equipment because I have everything working. I never criticized the farmer's welding. I just fixed everything he had tried to fix. Now he does not attempt to weld. He just brings it to me. But you say everything I have welded is wrong because I never bothered to get certified. I was once working for Ammon Bundy, the guy who took over the Malheur Wildlife Refuge in Oregon, putting a headboard on a semi-trailer. I cut something the wrong length, and instead of immediately cutting it off, I welded one end of it in place before getting down to get the cutting torch to fix it because it would save me a time of having to climb down to the ground. Just then Ammon drove up, and in his quiet inoffensive way asked me what I thought I was doing. That was back in 2008. The economy had just failed. I had already decided to go back to making handrails for S&H Steel, so I told him, Why don't you go down to the union hall and hire a certified welder, then you could be sure it would get done correctly? Well, there was a reason why Ammon would not do that. A certified welder would charge more than I was charging. That was one reason why I could always find work. I knew what to charge. I am the same way with relativity. I can tell that the earth turns on its axis, and scientists are always going to have to modify their standards to conform to the earth. Sorry to have to be the one to tell you this.

Well, we could discuss the Galilean transformation equations if you want to do that, Ed. Here are the Galilean transformation equations.
x'=x-vt
y'=y
z'=z
t'=t
You came here to this discussion about the Galilean transformation equations because you had something to say about them. Go ahead and say what you came here to say.

Actually, no. Say you want to set the time of their wristwatch correctly. Do you go use a sundial? While sundials are easy to build I have never seen one calibrated in seconds. People may set it from a radio station, which gets a calibrated feed from an atomic clock source. They may set it to a computer, which, these days, often has an NTP feed or equivalent, to an atomic clock. Or a cell phone which also gets the time from the tower which gets it from a calibrated atomic time source. There are also radio signals that self-adjusting clocks can receive and set themselves. >What I was pointing out was that the common people have a better standard >for time than scientists do. Well, no, common people have the same standard as scientists, the SI second. > They base theirs on the rotation of the earth, Very loosely so. "TAI" time is the true standard (proper time on Earth) produced by cesium clocks. High precision experiments would use this. There is also UT1 time which is TAI time adjusted once in a while to correct for the earth wobbliness. This is to keep midnight happening at midnight and it is for what the common people expect. Think of the Earth as an old mechanical clock that keeps OK time but is somewhat off, usually slow; you have to adjust it once in a while. The old mechanical clock (Earth) usually runs a bit slow but sometimes can speed up or slow down more. When the Earth gets more than 0.9 seconds behind (or ahead; but that has never happened) they add (or subtract; never happened) a leap second, on December 31 or June 30. The added leap second is equivalent to nudging the hands of a clock ahead a bit when the clock gets too far behind. It is typically necessary once every 18 months. They have added 27 seconds so far since 1972. > and a day is one rotation of the earth. The unit of time is the second, not the day. > The second is a fraction of the time of a day. No, a day is 24*60*60 (86,400) seconds. Approximately. >Scientists base theirs on transitions of cesium atoms. So if the rotation >of the earth is slowing down the way scientists say it is, what is going to >happen with the standards. As I stated, UT1 time is available for time aligned with the wobbly earth. As the earth slows down more, more leap seconds will need to be added to UT1 to keep midnight at midnight. >It looks to me as though the common people will keep theirs, and >scientists will change theirs. Why would scientists switch to something less accurate? Science will continue to use UT1/TAI time, as needed, and the common people will use UT1 (without knowing it, most likely) and every couple of years or so, people will see and wonder about a news story about a leap second being added due to the inaccuracy of the earth. > That is my opinion of the matter. And your opinion doesn't matter. Those in actual control (SI) knows better than you.

The added leap second is > eq... Well, I do not really think of earth that way. But you just made my point. I think of earth as a planet. So now scientists have all of these super clocks, but every once in a while, they do not agree with the earth because they claim the earth's rotation is slowing down. So what do the scientists do? Do they change the rotation of the earth? No, they add a second to a day so that their precise clocks will agree once again with the rotation of the planet. But notice something else. Back in ancient times, the common people who did not have precise clocks built Stonehenge, made all manner of other things trying to determine when the longest and shortest days were, and counted time according to the rotation of the earth on its axis and its revolution around the sun. So the common people are always going to win this one. Scientists are going to end up agreeing with the common people every time. A day is one rotation of the earth on its axis. A second is a fraction of the time it takes for the earth to rotate on its axis.
