Of course there is nothing to discuss. Great Guru told us what ideals are. We have to follow. > I assume this irrational insistence on using broken clocks is probably because those "ideal" ones don't work. Some dumber people care about keeping things working more than about the Holiest Symmetry. Unbelievable, isn't it?

Well, we could actually discuss the equations if that will help. These equations were used by all scientists to describe relativity until 1887, when scientists were troubled about the results of an experiment and agreed among themselves that further mention of the Galilean transformation equations would not be allowed. So now you are saying, Here is an person so insane that the Galilean transformation equations are being posted right here in sci.physics.relativity.
x'=x-vt
y'=y
z'=z
t'=t
I think it would be profitable to do what should have been done back in 1887 and actually discuss what the equations mean. I have never seen an experiment that proves these equations wrong.

It implies that a muon does not cause the earth to move at a high rate of speed, that is true. I do not really think that a muon causes the earth to move at a high rate of speed. What do you think about muons and the earth?

I do not really think that a muon causes the earth > to move at a high rate of speed. What do you think about muons and the earth? > What I think is that it makes no sense to talk about the speed of the earth and the speed of the muon individually. The only motion is relative motion. I’ll repeat that—relative motion is the ONLY motion. And so for the muon and the earth, the motion of the earth relative to the muon is exactly the same (and in the opposite direction) as the motion of the muon relative to the earth, and it makes no sense to say that the muon is traveling faster than the earth. This may not jive with your common sense, so I’ll give you a couple of examples to illustrate how faulty common sense can be. Sixty-six million years ago, 75% of the earth’s plant and animal species were wiped out by the impact of an asteroid about 8 miles across. The asteroid’s impact speed was about 67,000 mph, or almost Mach 90. That seems terribly fast and common sense might wonder how the asteroid got going so fast. But you see, common sense is mistaken, because the asteroid drifted slowly (relative to the Sun) into Earth’s vicinity, and it was the Earth that careened at high speed into the drifting asteroid. As another example, let’s suppose you were hired to do a little welding in Oslo, and afterwards you got on an airline to go home. The plane heads west at 550 mph, the engines whining. Now, common sense will say that the plane is the thing that is moving, not the earth, because you distinctly remember the plane accelerating with its engines at high throttle. And when you look out the window, you can see that the ground underneath is changing quickly as the plane proceeds. But as you watch, you notice that the sun does not change its position in the sky at all for the next six or seven hours. So relative to the line between Sun and Earth, it dawns on you at last, the plane is not moving at all. Instead, the ground (and the air hugging the ground) is doing all the moving as the earth rotates on its axis. With a little more wrestling with your common sense, it might even occur to you that the jet’s engines had to do all that work to REMOVE all the motion of the earth’s surface. But your common sense will likely balk at that and be a bit uncomfortable with it, and after a while it will slip back into making mistakes like thinking the earth moves slow and things that hit it are moving fast. -- Odd Bodkin -- maker of fine toys, tools, tables

Do we actually know that? That asteroid was moving slowly relative to the sun and earth pretty much ran it down? How could we know? I figure the asteroid almost certainly was in its own orbit so would have been moving at a similar speed.

If the asteroid was in orbit around the sun, it would have had the same speed as the earth in its orbit if it was the same distance from the sun. But it could have been orbiting in a different direction relative to the sun.

If a baseball is put in orbit around the earth at the altitude of the moon, it will have the same speed in its orbit as the moon has in its orbit. This is a principle Galileo discovered. Before Galileo scientists all believed Aristotle's idea that heavier objects fell faster.
