It's obvious and normal. It means nothing.

No, it doesn't fit at all. You invent the "religious" aspect of it because it fits your agenda and feeds your ego. Why can't you choose a hobby you can be good at? Must it be physics? I'm no good at painting, so I don't do it, for example. Simple! I'm good at mathematics, so I do it. I'm no good at music composition, so I don't inundate music newsgroups with my "pieces". Etc. - you get the idea? Virtually everything you post here is either incorrect or not even wrong. Why bother? -- Jan

Ken, the cult includes the Einstenian religion and its followers, not physics in general.

My blog has been kicking around for three for four years, wrong in many of its particulars, for example when I proclaimed first order synchrony. 1905 Section 2 Operation (b) is second order synchrony. It is just bizarre. I devote substantial column inches to Operation (b) for that reason, although it isn’t all that critical. Still, a few things maybe I did right. I use Google’s blogger basically free of click bait and bloatware as is sci phyics here ( also google ). Reddit is a hellhole. I saw early on that Einstein’s SRT of 1905 was not a coherent system of time and space, and that Einstein was aware of this fact. I outline many glosses toward the end of the blog. Secondly I saw correctly that now, at a remove of 110 years, we should not go forward into Minkowski’s four-space, rather go backwards into a junior high school science class. Total length is about 17 pages in 14 point Times-Roman. Too long, but hey, how much ya gimme? length contraction blogspot

TIA. Google with quotes: “the want of synchrony” This is in the EB-1930 article “Relativity” by Sir James Jeans and refers to incorrect one-way synchrony between Paris and London, incorrect to the first order in v/c, in other words, a big mistake. Einstein’s Operation (b) of 1905 used roundtrip synchrony incorrect to the second order in v/c ( a small mistake ), and this correction led to length contraction, or Lorentz Contraction which we know is of the second order in v/c, i.e., g = 1 / ( 1 – v²/c²) It seems that Sir JJ, presumably writing after 1905, simply chose not to deal with Operation (b), for whatever reason. I thought to ignore it also, and when I finally worked it out, I found layer upon layer of reversed logic, vintage Einstein.

And even that is not right, since length of the MMX longitudinal arm does not change value, i.e., by value x′ = x, only is the phenomenon of the length is describable by x′ = 1 / g · x Einstein is very specific about the latter in his Appendix 1 of 1920, where he has meter stick transformation by virtue of a “snapshot”. This leads to transformation of size of a ‘rigid body’ without changing meter stick value of the rigid body, which seems to be the essence of Lorentz Contraction. That unchanged value seems to be the gist of Operation (a) in E-1905-Section 2.

Since you are still not saying what you mean by that, I suppose that you
mean the following in Einstein’s “On the Electrodynamics of Moving Bodies”
(1905), where Einstein is saying, as (properly) translated by Anna Beck:
,-<https://einsteinpapers.press.princeton.edu/vol2-trans/157>
|
| §2. On the relativity of lengths and times
|
| […]
| We now seek to determine the length of the moving rod, which we
| imagine to be obtained by the following two operations:
|
| […]
| b) Using clocks at rest that are set up in the system at rest and are
| synchronous in the sense of §1, the observer determines the points
| of the system at rest at which the beginning and the end of the rod
| to be measured are found at some given time t. The distance between
| these two points, measured by the rod used before, which in the
| present case is at rest, is also a length, which can be designated
| as the "length of the rod."
With “§1”, he is referring to the preceding section, “§1. Definition of
simultaneity”. As you will see soon, this definition is key as we define
the length of an object as the spatial distance between its end points
*at the same time* (i.e. simultaneously).
[I cannot fathom why you think that synchronous clocks at rest
would in some way give wrong results.]
> would seem to require a length contraction factor
>
> 1/g² = ( 1 – v²/c² )
Yes, well, that is an *equivalent* expression:
1/g² = (1 − v²/c²)
g² = 1∕(1 − v²/c²)
g = √(1∕(1 − v²/c²)) ; 0 < v² < c² → 1∕(1 − v²/c²) > 0
g = √1∕√(1 − v²/c²))
g = 1∕√(1 − v²/c²). ∎
> Whereas the LT’s require a length contraction factor of
>
> 1/g = sqrt ( 1 – v²/c² )
Yes. You are seeing a contradiction where there is none:
1/g = √(1 – v²/c²)
g = 1∕√1 – v²/c²).
Which is why Einstein has "merely" derived the LT using *a completely
different approach* than Lorentz et al. – one that is *only* based on first
principles (principle of relativity and principle of light constancy). That
is one reason why we are using SR, and not LET, today.
And that is also why the term “Lorentz contraction” is, at best, only used
sparsely in modern physics; “length contraction” is used predominantly instead.
Because Lorentz’s idea (before special relativity – he was one of its early
adopters) was that objects are *physically* compressed in the direction of
motion by the aether when moving through it, i.e. when in some form of
*absolute* motion.
Einstein’s idea was instead that measured lengths in general depend on the
motion of frames of reference (“coordinate systems”) *relative to each
other*, and that the reason for that is not an undetectable aether, but
*how we measure time* and *define length*.
It is a common misconception (around here) to think that because Einstein
derived and used in SR what we now call the Lorentz transform(ation), he
also subscribed to Lorentz’s aether theory, or that modern
physics/physicists would subscribe to that aether theory because we/they use
SR. Nothing could be farther from the truth.
> And even that’s not right, since in the LT’s gamma appears in the
> numerator:
>
> x′ = g · x
[In the following I am merely reverse-engineering, in excruciating
detail, Lorentz’ derivation of the LT, and Einstein’s independent
derivation of the LT in OEdoMB.]
The actual LT equation for space in the x-direction of motion is, with your
ambiguous “g” replaced by the standard «γ»:
x′ = γ (x − v t).
[And as
γ = 1/√(1 − v²/c²),
that is equivalent to
x′ = (x − v t)/√(1 − v²/c²).]
Now consider two spatially separated points along the direction of motion of
a primed frame (of reference) relative to an unprimed frame, with spatial
coordinates x₁ and x₂ in the unprimed frame and corresponding spatial
coordinates x₁′ and x₂′ in the primed frame.
The spatial distance between the points in the primed frame is
∆x′ = x₂′ − x₁′.
Applying the LT, we find
x₁′ = γ (x₁ − v t₁)
x₂′ = γ (x₂ − v t₂)
∆x′ = x₂′ − x₁′ = γ (x₂ − v t₂) − [γ (x₁ − v t₁)]
= γ (x₂ − v t₂) − γ (x₁ − v t₁)
= γ [x₂ − v t₂ − (x₁ − v t₁)]
= γ (x₂ − v t₂ − x₁ + v t₁)
= γ (x₂ − x₁ − v t₂ + v t₁)
= γ [x₂ − x₁ − v (t₂ − t₁)].
∆x′ = x₂′ − x₁′ = γ (x₂ − x₁ − v (t₂ − t₁)).
But x₂ − x₁ is just the spatial distance between the points in the unprimed
frame at the same time t = t₁ = t₂ in the unprimed frame:
∆x′ = γ (∆x − v ∆t)
∆x = x₂ − x₁
∆t = t₂ − t₁ = t − t = 0.
So for the spatial distance between the points in the primed frame:
∆x′ = γ ∆x
And for the spatial distance between the points in the unprimed frame:
∆x = ∆x′∕γ.
But the spatial distance between two points at the same time is equivalent
to the *length* of a rod connecting those two points exactly *at the same
time*. [You could also say that there is only one measure of time in the
frame in which the clock is at rest as it is an inertial frame of reference
in which Newton’s laws are true. The difference is merely conceptual.]
Now, if we are considering a rod that is moving relative to the observer at
rest in the unprimed frame, then the rod is at rest in the primed frame.
It is (only) there where its length equals its proper length: L′ = L₀.
Therefore, the length L of the moving rod in the unprimed frame is
L = L′∕γ = L₀∕γ.
[I had formerly labeled L “L'” instead, but I want to avoid confusion
here: unprimed labels for quantities measured in the unprimed frame,
primed labels for quantities measured in the primed frame. However,
the principle of relativity requires that L₀ does not depend on in
which frame of reference the rod is at rest.]
IOW, if the primed frame (Einstein’s “moving system”) is moving relative to
the unprimed frame (Einstein’s “system at rest”), an observer at rest in the
unprimed frame will observe a *length contraction* in the primed frame:
lengths there, including that of a rod that is co-moving with the primed
frame (Einstein’s “moving rod”), will *appear* (are *measured*) to be
shorter than the same lengths at relative rest. ∎
> There are various ways to put gamma in the denominator. Lorentz’s Versuch
> of 1895 seems to show a denominator version:
>
> x′ = 1 / g · x
If by “Versuch [German for ‘experiment’, ‘trial’] of 1985” you are referring
to the 1895 variant of Lorentz’ transformation equations (why?), in 1892 it was
𝔵 = V∕√(V² − p²) 𝓍
where 𝓍 is the already Galilean-transformed spatial coordinate
𝓍 = x − v t,
so that is in modern notation
x' = c∕√(c² − v²) (x − v t)
x' = c∕√(c² (1 − v²∕c²)) (x − v t)
= c∕(c √(1 − v²∕c²)) (x − v t)
= 1∕ √(1 − v²∕c²) (x − v t)
x' = (x − v t)∕√(1 − v²∕c²)
x' = γ (x − v t).
Lorentz "changed" this in 1895 to
𝓍 = x' √(1 − 𝔭²∕V²),
which is in modern notation
x − v t = x' √(1 − v²∕c²).
Note that in 1892 x' was on the left-hand side and 𝓍 = x − v t was the
factor on the right-hand side; while in 1895 𝓍 is on the left-hand side
and x' is the factor on the right-hand side.
If we solve this for x', we have
x − v t = x' √(1 − v²∕c²) = x'∕γ
γ (x − v t) = x'
x' = γ (x − v t).
IOW, the equations of 1892 and 1895 are *equivalent to each other* and
*to what Einstein found independently* in 1905 (without assuming an aether).

Lorentz has a rigid body composed of “ions”. The size ( length ) of the longitudinal arm of the MMX is then a count of ions. Stationary, that is x, i.e., x ions. Forced through the “aether” these spherical ions are compressed into ellipsoids. How long then is the moving arm of the MMX? Its ion count has not changed: x′= x But each ion is longitudinally smaller (an ellipsoid ), so overall length is: x′= 1/g · x Lorentz’s ions are exactly like Einstein’s “unit measuring-rod” of Appendix 1 1920, which unit-rod in the moving frame Einstein writes approximately as: x′= 1/g · 1 The primed ( moving ) unit-rod is the shorter than the stationary unit-rod. Here’s the thing: If you put Lorentz’s ion objects side-by-side, you find the primed ( moving ) MMX arm less extensive than the stationary arm, due to aether compression of ions. In other words, x and x′ are not at the same place. Write the classical Lorentz Transform: x′= g · ( x – v · t ) We now have event space. The LT’s require it. In other words, x′ ~ x are an event, that is one point in space, whereas Lorentz’s x′ ~ x are not the same location in space and hence not an event. Put t = 0. x′= g · x x′ > x At spacial event location x′ ~ x, we have x′ > x. That’s because the unit measuring-rod doing x′ is smaller than the unit measuring-rod doing x. Appendix 1 almost certainly uses this logic. Of course, x′ > x is not contraction. You have contraction if you take a “rigid body” out of frame K ( stationary ) and put it in frame K′ ( moving ). Using the measuring-rod of frame K, and from the point of view of frame K, you can describe the rigid body in frame K′ as: x′= 1/g · x But on the left hand side, x′ is not a variable reported by the measuring rod in from K′. It is reported by the unit-rod in frame K. Furthermore, the Lorentz Transforms cannot deliver the equation. Einstein never writes a length contraction equation. In E-1905 Section 4 he has a “rigid sphere”. It is observed in motion. The stationary guy finds that the longitudinal axis has shrunk up and he observes an ellipsoid, which fact Einstein expresses by verbalizing a ratio: 1 : ( 1 / g ) Of course, frames K and K′ are three dimensional: X,Y,Z and X′,Y′,Z′. Meter sticks of X,Y,Z are all alike and frame K is isotropic. The meter stick X′ is shorter than its counterparts on Y′ and Z′, also shorter than the meter stick in frame K. Thus frame K′ is anisotropic. Einstein does not use the term. The literature of SRT ( spezielle Relativitätstheorie ) hardly ever mentions an anisotropic frame. In 1911, Vladimir Varićak undertook wild gyrations, parkoured his person, did the Fosbury Flip and danced thé dansant.

Science has made progress in the last 123 years, you know. > Write the classical Lorentz Transform: > > x′= g · ( x – v · t ) > > We now have event space. Yes he does. > In E-1905 Section 4 he has a “rigid sphere”. Length contraction is discussed in “§2. On the relativity of lengths or times” and “§3. Theory of transformation of coordinates and time from a system at rest to a system in uniform translational motion relative to it”. As I have just showed you, length contraction follows rather trivially from the LT. As Einstein has derived the LT from the two principles, there really is no need for him to "write a length contraction equation". Your problem is that you are *ignorant* enough that you cannot read comprehensively, cannot even do *highschool*-level algebra (addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, squaring, and taking the square root), even when it is explained to you in excruciating detail, and *arrogant* enough that you think you can still disprove relativity, armed with nothing but an *illusion* of knowledge. Unfortunately, this is a common combination in cranks. > [word salad] Hopeless. -- PointedEars Twitter: @PointedEars2 Please do not cc me. / Bitte keine Kopien per E-Mail.

Very good input, thanks ! If you have x′ only 90% the size of x you might have: x′ = 0.9 · x For this equation to have its intended effect, meter sticks on the right and left sides must be identical, and algebra usually assumes that. But the LT’s must have mismatched meter sticks, right and left, unprimed and primed, stationary and moving. That’s what the LT’s do, they doctor up the moving meter stick. Lorentz’s equation ( 24 ) of 1895 can’t wriggle out of it. Einstein wriggled out of it. He did not write a length contraction equation. He wrote a ratio of constants: 1 : 0.9 Both sides are judged in the stationary frame. No variables subject to meter sticks are present. E-1905 Section 2 dealing with the “rigid sphere”: 1 : ( 1 / g )

No. One *chooses* one of the two frames of reference, either the left-hand side or the right-hand side one, so to speak, to compare the lengths in the different frames. > That’s what the LT’s do, they doctor up the moving meter stick. No. You simply have no clue. > [not even wrong] Hopeless. -- PointedEars Twitter: @PointedEars2 Please do not cc me. / Bitte keine Kopien per E-Mail.
