Take a look at this illustration: https://drive.google.com/open?id=11B-lx3At_ewGVmMUmKtwRylJJGAr_Osc Each tick mark on the horizontal axis represents 10 cm. The pendulum line substitutes for a mildly curved, nearly frictionless table the shape of the red line, along which I can set a metal ball rolling. At distances less than 10 cm, it would be rather hard for you to tell that the table is not flat.

Iron bearing common minerals are decent, like siderite. The downside is that the susceptibility is down by a factor of 10 or 20. This will also almost completely kill energy losses due to eddy currents. -- Odd Bodkin — Maker of fine toys, tools, tables

At tall lobby of the physics building of a local university they have a heavy pendulum hanging from the ceiling and the pendulum swing back and forth without loosing any periodicity. Is that what you are trying to duplicate? In your experiment you introduced the magnet with washers...is this designed to provide a repulsive force to the pendulum so that it go around the magnet in circular orbits? How is your experiment demonstrates that a single force of attractive gravity can make the moon to have stable orbit around the earth?

It will demonstrate that the attractive force of a magnet can support stable orbits, despite your claim of June 18. https://groups.google.com/d/msg/sci.physics.relativity/A_X409P-bz0/w24-oVmHBQAJ The pendulum line substitutes for a smooth, nearly frictionless table.

No the heavy pendulum have momentum. That’s why the heavy pendulum at the university can swing back and forth without loosing any momentum. It is likely hat the magnet have little or no effect on your experiment.

That’s why the heavy pendulum at the university can swing back and forth without loosing any momentum. It is likely hat the magnet have little or no effect on your experiment. You misread my answer. By "pendulum line", I meant the strand of fishing line that will support the pendulum bob. The pendulum line will substitute for an almost flat, nearly frictionless table by restricting the motions of the pendulum bob to a section of a very shallow sphere.

No, the pendulum bob’s momentum will allow it to maintain its motion.....so it is not due to the attractive force of the center magnet.

That's the whole point, Ken. Eliminate friction as much as possible so the only effects are the central force and momentum. Momentum is the reason the Moon doesn't crash into the Earth even though there is only a single attractive force of gravity, as Newton proved long ago. The experiment being described has only a single attractive magnetic force and momentum of the bob, with friction eliminated as much as possible.

Sigh.....if there is no force to maintain the momentum the moon will gradually crash into the earth. Similarly if there is no force to maintain the momentum, the pendulum bob will gradually crash into the magnet.

Ken, do you even know Newton's Laws? What will cause the moon to lose momentum if not "maintained"? Who "maintains" it, God? Don't you know that momentum is a conserved quantity and there is no friction in space? This is basic high school stuff! > Similarly if there is no force to >maintain the momentum, the pendulum bob will gradually crash into the >magnet. That's the whole point of minimizing the friction (by using a long line so there is only minimal air resistance). The moon is outside the atmosphere and there is no friction.

I am working on an (almost) full computer simulation that will include
magnetic, gravitational, and air friction contributions to the pendulum motions.
I am programming in C# because Javascript isn't fast enough.
C# can come close to C++ in speed if one avoids using fancy constructs,
and C++ can likewise come close to C in speed.
(However, it has long been untrue that C's virtual machine model can
be considered a near-perfect match to modern hardware design. But
discussing that is completely off-topic.)
The only factors that I can't yet include are losses through inelastic
bending of the fishing line and losses through eddy current generation
in the washers, because I don't have any good data on those losses.
Yes, the pendulum will inevitably crash. But the reason will primarily be
air friction. I imagine that if I could set up a vacuum chamber, that the
experiment could run for several hours.
But I don't have a vacuum chamber. So I will have to settle for much
shorter experimental runs.
The point is, I can MODEL these different effects and compare with
experiment.

You forget that I have ***MEASURED*** the attractive force of the magnet at different distances. Because of the roughly inverse fifth power fall-off of magnetic attraction versus distance, I know that I will have to work at close distances for the force of magnetic attraction to dominate over gravitation, even with a 5 meter fishing line. Using a magnet poking through the table arrangement and a 1 kg weight, the force of magnetic attraction at 5 cm will be 3 times that of the radial force of gravity. Using the stacked washers alone, magnetic attraction at that distance will be 35 times that of gravity. The magnets underneath arrangement does not allow as much magnetic attraction, but I can work with arbitrarily small orbital radii, and the pendulum radial attractive force ***goes down*** with decreasing radius. Plus, I can perform measurements both ***with and without*** the magnets. I presume that you know about "controlled experiments"? Or maybe you don't. There is no way that I can freehand launch pendulums with sufficient accuracy to achieve reproducible results, so I will be building calibrated rubber band slingshots over the July 4 holiday. I just finished this morning drilling an acrylic sheet for the magnet poking through the table arrangement. I haven't removed the protective facing plastic, accounting for the frosted appearance. But it will be clear after I remove the facing sheets. There is one magnet poking above the sheet resting on a spacer, and three magnets below the sheet. https://drive.google.com/open?id=1T17gNN-BNUqwtDROBC7VkwtcjULfF1n1 Another thing that I need to build is an open table to lay the sheet on so that I can photograph from below. Since the sheet is only 18" x 24", the legs of the table will need to be splayed out for me to crawl in and out easily without fear of knocking into one of the legs. I have a fair amount of waste wood in the garage. I won't have to spend much on new lumber. _____ / \ / -o- \ (me underneath the table) Unfortunately, building the table will test my woodworking skills to the limit. Up to now, my woodworking has been limited to regularly replacing sections of fence that have gotten rotten over the years and/or blown down by thunderstorm winds. I don't know if I will want to post a photograph of my table. We have a professional woodworker here who might have some mean things to say of my amateur efforts... :-)

Make a table wide enough the you can fit comfortably between the legs. I presume that you will have an open box frame at the top that is perhaps 36”x24”. Then just put in a couple of joists 24” long spaced 18” apart. This is small enough that 2x4s will make it plenty stiff, and you can buy rubber 2x4 caps for about 75 cents each to make nonslip feet. This will consume three 8’ 2x4 boards and take about 20 minutes to hammer together. -- Odd Bodkin — Maker of fine toys, tools, tables

Clearly your device will not be able to maintain a stable orbit for a long time. The continuous attractive force of the magnet will gradually overcome the momentum of the pendulum bob and cause it to crash into the magnet. Furthermore, there are more than one attractive force of the magnet.....the fish line have an attractive component on the pendulum bob and cause it to move toward the magnet. In addition even if you were able to maintain a stable orbit, it is not the same as the moon orbiting the earth....the moon is not attached to any fish line and it is able to maintain stable orbit. This means that the moon must be subjected to a continuous force that enables it to maintain its momentum that enables it to have a stable orbit.

No, not just air friction. The attractive magnetic force is continuous and the attractive component of the fish line is continuous. The momentum of the pendulum bob is not continuously maintained at full strength because of the attractive force of the magnet and the fishline are continuously pulling on it. > > > Furthermore, there are more than one attractive force: the attractive magnetic.....the fish line have an attractive component on the pendulum bob and cause it to move toward the magnet.
