If there is something from basic physics that you find unbelievable, then this is a symptom of you being UNEDUCATED, not a symptom that it’s a wild claim. 3. So go ahead and show us how. Nevertheless, except for eddy current effects noted by Ed Prochak, conservation of energy and conservation of angular momentum apply. No matter how complex the orbit due to the dipole nature of the magnetic field, if you can avoid collision (for the purposes of the thought experiment, simply reduce the magnet to two point monopoles and reduce the ferromagnetic particle to point size), the orbiting particle ***MUST*** continue to orbit.

Why don’t you do it and let us know. BTW, the existence of monopoles is questionable....no monopole ever been found.

The ***IMPORTANT*** thing was to explore the consequences of the laws of conservation of energy and angular momentum, WHICH YOU ARE OBVIOUSLY IGNORANT OF!!!!

There are many demonstrations online of how Kepler's laws may be derived from Newton's laws. There is a tricky integration step in the derivation of Kepler's First Law that defeated me when I tried to do the derivation by myself. I finally gave up and "cheated" by looking online. I was first exposed to the derivation at the 1968 Summer Science Program held that the Thatcher School, Ojai, CA. With mathematics, we can explore the consequences of a set of physical assumptions. Newton's law of gravitational force results in stable elliptical orbits. Only ***mathematical illiterates*** would question the derivation presented in the link that I provided. > > For example: > > http://galileo.phys.virginia.edu/classes/152.mf1i.spring02/KeplersLaws.htm > > > > I like this presentation because it doesn't gloss over the calculus. > > There is a tricky integration step in the derivation of Kepler's First Law > > that defeated me when I tried to do the derivation by myself. As opposed to physical experiments, thought experiments do not report new empirical data. They can only provide conclusions based on deductive or inductive reasoning from their starting assumptions. Thought experiments invoke particulars that are irrelevant to the generality of their conclusions. It is the invocation of these particulars that give thought experiments their experiment-like appearance. A thought experiment can always be reconstructed as a straightforward argument, without the irrelevant particulars. John D. Norton, a well-known philosopher of science, has noted that "a good thought experiment is a good argument; a bad thought experiment is a bad argument." When effectively used, the irrelevant particulars that convert a straightforward argument into a thought experiment can act as "intuition pumps" that stimulate readers' ability to apply their intuitions to their understanding of a scenario. UNFORTUNATELY, THOUGHT EXPERIMENTS ARE INEFFECTIVE WHEN PRESENTED TO CRACKPOTS WHOSE INTUITIVE SENSE OF RIGHTNESS ARE COMPLETELY SCREWED UP. > > The ***IMPORTANT*** thing was to explore the consequences of the laws of > > conservation of energy and angular momentum, WHICH YOU ARE OBVIOUSLY > > IGNORANT OF!!!! > > You are ignorant of the fact that a single attractive force (such as the CP force) cannot make an object to maintain a stable orbit it. From what I can see, your model for gravity violates conservation of energy. It cannot support stable orbits.

No, I actually had you in mind as a near-perfect example of what I am talking about, Ken. You have a wrong belief (actually, several) which you are obsessed about. Psychologists call this an "idee fixe". No amount of trying to talk sense to you will ever convince you that your wrong beliefs are wrong. You demonstrate this with every single one of your responses. When presented with logic that you can't easily brush off, your illogic just comes out in another form, and at some time in the future you repeat your refuted illogic as if nothing ever happened. So it doesn't help that someone plugged one of your illogic leaks, your illogic just starts leaking out elsewhere in another form. You are a poster child of exactly what I was talking about.

Well you chose a poor system as an analogy. There are several problems modeling gravity using iron ball and magnet. You and Odd have covered the obvious problem, namely friction But even solving that there are other issues. First is the fact that gravity is a unipole field. A magnet yields a dipole field. So if you are using a bar magnet for example and you lay that on its side on the center of the work table, the shape of the magnetic field is very different from the shape of a gravitational field. So the force is not always directed toward the magnet. You can begin to solve this by placing the magnet vertically and also under the surface. Now most of field is radial like gravity, but not uniformly inverse square. Second is the conductivity of the iron ball. Any conductive material moving through a magnetic field experiences electric currents generated within the material. These currents in turn generate their own magnetic field. This distorts the field affecting the forces on the ball and again the result is different from the gravitational field being modeled. These will be small, but like friction, it will affect the motion. Just pointing this out that it is not simple to model gravity using magnetism. So Ken's failure may be due to more than than just poor execution of the experiment. Ed

Yes, I forgot about induced currents in the iron particle resulting in energy loss.

Yes. Air hockey table to eliminate friction. Air hockey puck with permanent magnet resting on top. Electromagnet positioned under table, generating a dipole field when current is turned on. Launch hockey puck with spring-powered launcher to provide a tuned speed to the puck, along a line that is offset from the dot under which the magnet sits. When puck passes point if closest approach, turn switch to run current through electromagnet. Puck exhibits a closed orbit around the dot. I’m sure you know how to search YouTube for this video. Note the difference between the careful demonstration design here and your crappy kitchen table attempt. > >> >> First is the fact that gravity is a unipole field. >> A magnet yields a dipole field.
