Having made a study of the facets of Einstein's theory of relativity with which I disagreed, and having some years ago having decided that my objections were based on the equations discarded by scientists in 1887, the Galilean transformation equations, I have decided to go ahead and explain the results of modern scientific discovery with regard to relativity starting with the equations thrown away in 1887, Newton's absolute time interpretation of the Galilean transformation equations, and show how some of Einstein's ideas apply to those equations. Newton based his interpretation on one set of Galilean transformation equations.
x'=x-vt
y'=y
z'=z
t'=t
The inverse to these equations would be
x = x' - v't'
y = y'
z = z'
t = t'
with the obvious conclusion that v' = -v.
In describing transmission of light, scientists had attached the existence of ether to these equations, a medium through which light was conducted just as sound is conducted through the medium of air or some other medium, such as metal, etc. The scientific world was surprised when the Michelson-Morley experiment showed that ether did not exist according to their understanding of a medium. Whether or not there is something that could be called ether, Einstein arrived at some conclusions about the transmission of light that apply to the Galilean transformation equations just as well as to the Lorentz equations he was using.
First of all, the distance that exists between a source of light and a point in a frame of reference where light is observed is the distance in that frame of reference the light must travel, regardless of the movement of the source of light or the frame of reference in which it is observed. Suppose that light is emitted a distance of d from an observer in frame of reference S. If the source of light is in motion relative to S, that does not affect the distance d the light must travel to an observer in S.
Now suppose the observer in S moves while the light is traveling to him. This creates another frame of reference, S', the frame of reference of the observer. Scientists believed that S was a preferred frame of reference, meaning that if the observer moved, it increased or decreased the distance the light had to travel relative to the observer. But, looking at it from the frame of reference of the observer, the observer is not moving in S', his own frame of reference. The source of light is moving relative to the observer, so the situation is no different in S' than it was in S when the observer was not moving relative to S. The distance the light will travel in S' is d, the same distance it travels in S. The point in frame of reference S' where the light was emitted remains at a distance of d in that frame of reference and does not increase or decrease according to any movement of the source of light relative to the observer in S'. In other words, the mistake scientists made was in assuming there was a preferred frame of reference with respect to light. Whatever distance exists between a source of light and the point where it will be observed at the time the light is emitted is the distance the light will travel in all frames of reference. The point where light was emitted stays the same regardless of the motion of the source of light relative to the frame of reference where it is observed.
The Galilean transformation equations can be used to describe light and its transmission without any ambiguity at all. The only thing that needed to be discarded was the idea that S was a preferred frame of reference.
What the Michelson-Morley experiment was measuring was not speed of light as it was envisioned by scientists, but the speed with which light reacts with the elements in a given frame of reference.
So now let us consider the equations Einstein said he was using, the Lorentz equations.
x' = (x-vt)/sqrt(1-v^2/c^2)
y' = y
z' = z
t' = (t-vx/c^2)/sqrt(1 - v^2/c^2)
Although Lorentz, Einstein, and succeeding scientists threw all conventional common sense to the winds with their ideas about length contraction, time dilation, etc., they clung tenaciously to one tenet of Newtonian relativity, constant speed between frames of reference. Newton said that v'=-v, meaning that an observer in S would see S' moving with a speed of v relative to S, and an observer in S' would see S moving with a speed of v relative to S'. This, of course, is entirely true if they have a common measurement of time. Scientists in the time of Newton or Galileo did have a common measurement of time, the rotation of the earth. Scientists of today have scientific or atomic time, which varies according to conditions of motion or gravitation. Newton or Galileo would not have had the problems that modern scientists are having. If they had encountered two different rates of time, they would have decided the one they wanted to use and converted the other rate to that one. Perhaps this is where scientists invented the idea of a preferred frame of reference. But the mathematically correct way to represent two different rates of time is not with the Lorentz equations, but with two different sets of Galilean transformation equations with different variables for time and velocity.
Two sets of Galilean transformation equations show the problem with the Lorentz equations as a description of relativity. The Lorentz equations show that the speed between frames of reference is v as measured from S or S'. The interpretation that scientists have is that from S, a clock in S' is slower, and from S', a clock in S is slower. Now we use two sets of Galilean transformation equations.
x'=x-vt
y'=y
z'=z
t'=t
t is the time of a clock in S. t'=t shows that this time is being used in both frames of reference. v is the velocity of S' relative to S. This set of equations says nothing about the rate of a clock in S'. It only shows the rate of a clock in S.
x = x' - v'n'
y = y'
z = z'
n = n'
n' is the time of a clock in S' n=n' shows that the time of the clock in S' is being used in both frames of reference. v' is the velocity of S' relative to S. This set of equations says nothing about the rate of a clock in S. It only shows the rate of a clock in S'.
So how does the rate of a clock in S' compare to the rate of a clock in S? We do not know unless we measure it experimentally. Scientists can always come up with equations which they say predict experimental results by combining Special Relativity with General Relativity, adjusting to conform with whatever a specific experiment shows. This does not seem particularly helpful, considering that the correct equations, two sets of Galilean transformation equations show that clocks with different rates do not show the same speed v between frames of reference S and S', but
v' = vt/n'
two different speeds.
So as long as scientists do not want to talk about velocities, I predict that they will remain in their present state of confusion.

The first thing a scientist should do with a new idea is matching its quantitative predictions with already known experimental data. For GT, it will fail, unless gravity or speed are low enough to hide deviations within experimental errors. For everyday life, GT and Newton mechanics are correct, as their errors are statistically insignificant. -- Libor Striz aka Poutnik ( a pilgrim/wanderer/wayfarer) "Humour is the only effective weapon against stupidity." What got me thinking was the solar system. The seconds we use for measurement of time are defined in two ways, a fraction of the time it takes the earth to rotate on its axis, and transitions of a cesium atom. According to scientists of today, a clock on Mercury, which is close to the sun and travels at 30 miles per second in its orbit, would have a different rate than a clock on earth, which is further from the sun and travels at 20 miles per second in its orbit. But the significant time in this would seem to be the time of the sun, which, theoretically would differ from both earth time and Mercury time. Then it seems to me that there would be an equation or set of equations that would apply to all planets with regard to time and gravitation of each planet as compared with the time and gravitation of the sun. I think that Newton was on the right track, but he was using absolute time instead of different clock rates such as scientists say exist.

You are dancing around one big misunderstanding of Theory of relativity. The clocks do not change their rate. Observers moving wrt a periodic signal source and/or being in different gravity then a source perceive different rate* of these periodic events than an observer would notice if in rest wrt the source and at the same gravity. * It applies even if classical Doppler effect us considered. If speed us not much less than c, Increasing of frequency of approaching signal source is measureably weaker than expected, while decrease of frequency of departing signal source is measureably stronger than expected. Considering mutual speed time dilation, object themselves have no speed, so rate change due speed is not possible. Generally, if clocks really changed their rate, by gravity or speed, all observed periodic processes would change their rate reciprocally. That is not observed. -- Libor Striz aka Poutnik ( a pilgrim/wanderer/wayfarer) "Humour is the only effective weapon against stupidity." While it may be true that atomic time works fine for measuring atomic reactions, etc., which all occur at the same rate as transitions of cesium atoms, and are always measured by clocks operating at the same rates, when it comes to large distances and clock rates, a clock in a GPS satellite is measurably faster than an identical clock on earth according to scientists. So, although an observer in the satellite would be unable to discern any difference between his observations with regard to atomic reactions, etc. and the observations of an observer on earth, the velocities he is measuring are actually slower according to a second counted by rotations of the earth because his clock is faster than a clock on the surface of the earth. So what are you saying, that periodic processes all agree with a clock on earth or with the clock where the periodic processes occur? I say that it is with the clock where the periodic processes occur, which means that all velocities are slower in the GPS satellite as measured by the clock on earth.

No, incoming signal rate is faster. That is very different thing. An engine of the approaching car has a higher acoustic pitch than of the same departing one, passing a listener. Does it mean the engine has more revolutions per minute in the approaching phase, comparing it to the departing one ? No, it does not. > So what are you saying, that periodic processes all agree with a clock on earth or with the clock where the periodic processes occur? Periodic processes agree with adjacent clocks. If clock and a periodic signal are mutually moving and/or are at different gravity, perception of signal rate is changed, similarly as in the passing car example. Well, I still don't visualize what you are saying. Scientists used to just come right out and say, The moving clock is slower, or the clock on the airplane was faster. I would say that all processes slow down or speed up the same way transitions of a cesium atom do. Scientists of today say, Oh, no, the transitions of a cesium atom never change. Well, Robert, that’s the problem with the sloppy language used by newspaper and television reporters trying to describe what was observed: people tend to make up their own inferences on what that means — as you did. The good thing about precise scientific language is that those kinds of sloppy inferences get curtailed. And in fact, it is very interesting how two clocks that end up recording different elapsed times can do that without the rate of either clock having been altered. That is the rather remarkable result of relativity that it accounts for this in a completely different way, and that’s why it’s interesting to learn. >> -- >> Libor Striz aka Poutnik ( a pilgrim/wanderer/wayfarer) >> >> "Humour is the only effective weapon against stupidity." >> Miloš Forman >> >> >> ----Android NewsGroup Reader---- >> http://usenet.sinaapp.com/ > > -- Odd Bodkin — Maker of fine toys, tools, tables

I know your different way, and I do not believe in it. Two sets of Galilean transformation equations show that lengths are not contracted, but clocks can run at different rates of time. So, if clocks show different elapsed times, I say they have different rates. Sorry if you think this is sloppy language. I think it is language that says exactly what I want to say.
