So, as the protons accelerate the magnetic field increases to contain the proton beam? I doubt that the proton beam even exists. Also, a synchrotron is accelerating electrons not protons. So, you cannot use a synchrotron to justify a proton beam. An electron beam exists and is used in the 1960's TV but I cannot think of a proton beam that is used. Maybe protons do not exist. So shit for brains do not forget to explain how a protons that are being accelerated are contained with the pipe beam as the hadron beam velocity increases, and, also explain how the protons are accelerated while propagating on the more than 10 km circumference path. It certainly does, as the strength of the B field is proportional to particle energy. Thus, the proton energy is increased by a factor of 10 in the last ring of the LHC (even while the speed is only increased by a tiny fraction, as it's very near c), so the magnetic field must be increased steadily during the 20 minutes it takes to accelerate the 27 km long head-to-tail stream of protons (about 2800 bunches of them) that circulates 11,245 times a second around the ring (this number doesn't change to within 5 sig digits-- that's a relativistic effect). You might want to read about how it all works. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Large_Hadron_Collider Over 100 countries, which is more than half the nation-states on Earth, have contributed to it. More than 40 get direct computer data from it. >> I doubt that the proton beam even exists. Oh, now you're getting skeptical about proton beams. Every PET scanner uses F-18 produced by a medical cyclotron, which puts out a beam of deuterons. The proton was recognized and named in 1920, by Rutherford. Cockroft and Walton, working at Rutherford's lab in 1933, first split the atom with an artificially produced beam. They split lithium atoms with a proton beam produced by a giant high voltage accelerator. https://www.google.com/search?q=proton+beam&client=firefox-b-1&source=lnms&tbm=isch&sa=X&ved=0ahUKEwiRseKDhYbaAhWEu1MKHVZZCv0Q_AUICigB&biw=1263&bih=635 >> Also, a synchrotron is accelerating electrons not protons. It certainly exists and has many similarities to an electron beam, other than how it's formed. Major differences: Protons have the opposite charge, so in the design of accelerators, deflectors etc. you'll have to change the signs of the magnetic and electric fields applied. Protons are 1832 times more massive than electrons, so their momentum and energy will be quite different at given velocities.

numbernumber1964@gmail.com writes: >It certainly does,.. as the strength of the B field is proportional to >particle energy....What does Moroney say? I am no accelerator designer, but I do know this: Steve is correct in that a magnet that deflects a beam must have a magnetic field perpendicular to both the beam's initial direction and to the direction of the applied forced to the beam (F=Bqv, right hand rule). With the beam in a plane parallel to the (local) plane of the earth's elevation, the B field would have to be vertical. And if we want the beam to remain in the pipe, and with v~=c, we need the acceleration of the beam around the curve to be a constant. So if the effective mass of the individual particles is proportional to their energy, and with F=ma, with constant 'a', it makes perfect sense that the force, and therefore the magnetic field B, must be proportional to the particle energy at the time. So what Steve said makes perfect sense. Question to anyone who knows: It was mentioned there are 1232 deflection magnets. Do the magnetic fields of these magnets overlap so that the ring really is essentially a circle, or is it more accurately described as a 1232-gram, a 1232 sided polygon (with rounded corners), with a magnet at each corner?

Idiot! Their mass is not proportional to their energy. Their mass does not change.

The magnets do more than deflect the particles. They keep them focused in a fine beam.

Ralph, I said effective mass, which for relativistic motion is gamma times the particle's rest mass. Or the effective momentum which is that value times c. It represents the particle's energy as mass, using e=mc^2. >> Question to anyone who knows: It was mentioned there are 1232 deflection >> magnets. Ralph, those are different magnets, quadrupole magnets do the focusing. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Quadrupole_magnet The deflection magnets are ordinary dipole type.

This would be in an infinite (age and size) universe, no motion relative to the background.........but how to recognise it or pin it down? Note the LHC magnets have two apertures with the magnetic field directed oppositely, so the counter-rotating proton beams are each bent in the proper direction (toward the center of the ring). > And if we want the beam to remain in the pipe, and with v~=c, we need the > acceleration of the beam around the curve to be a constant. So what Steve said makes perfect sense. But it is wrong. The (vertical) magnetic field must be proportional to the particles' MOMENTUM, not their energy. The bending radius of a charged particle inside a dipole magnet is proportional to its momentum, and that must equal the bending radius of the beam pipe. In the (essentially) inertial frame of the LHC, the energy of each particle is m/sqrt(1-v^2) (units with c=1), while their momentum is mv/sqrt(1-v^2). But v ~ 0.99999999 for protons at 7 TeV, so numerically these are nearly equal, but conceptually they are quite different. > Question to anyone who knows: It was mentioned there are 1232 deflection > magnets. The latter. In the LHC, each pair of adjacent magnets is separated by a straight section. These range from less than a meter between most pairs, to a few meters for pairs separated by a quadrupole magnet or other instrumentation, up to hundreds of meters at the intersection regions. Inside each bending (dipole) magnet, the beam track is a circle (radius ~ 4 km), not a corner. Tom Roberts

This makes it four.
