Tom, I understand your frustration. You have lost another sacred cow. GPS was simply not sufficiently accurate when c+v was used and some very clued up fellow suggested they find a way to utilize Wilson's great idea of counting absolute wavelengths instead. > Tom Roberts

xxein: I hope I remember this correctly. In the early days of development ('77?) of the GPS they almost launched with an incorrect application of Einstein's relativity. Carroll O. Alley had to set them right. Whether he was alone in this can be questioned but he convinced them that they were using a double relativistic correction instead of just the one that was needed.
I'm just saying that some blather in the face of the expert design teams turns out right.

THe 'GR correction' is totally unnecessary since the clocks are
re-synched when in orbit and their time differences with Earth disappear
in the maths anyway. The main criterion is that all the orbiting clocks
are in absolute synch. They can run at any practical rate.
Every material object will physically change when relieved of
gravitational self-compression so it is not surprising that even atomic
clock rates may change very slightly when it happens to them. No clock
is perfect.
A vertical 1 metre steel rod will extend by about 2 nm when sent in orbit.

The GPS consists of three segments: space, ground, and user. The space segment contains the satellites (and their clocks), the ground segment has many atomic clocks on the ground and is used to control the overall system, and the user segment consists of the many GPS receivers. Only about half of the atomic clocks in the GPS are in orbit, the others are on the ground. The GR correction is ABSOLUTELY NECESSARY for the operation of the ENTIRE GPS. You could fantasize about some OTHER satellite navigation system that did not apply the GR correction to its clocks, but that would NOT be the GPS. The European Galileo system looked long and hard at not applying the GR correction [#], and concluded it would make the system too difficult to manage. So it is only your FANTASY that this correction is "totally unnecessary". [#] Their initial documents stated it would not be applied. Later documents changed this and the operational satellites all apply it. Moreover, of course, the "re-synching" of GPS satellite clocks is at the scale of a few nanoseconds per day, more than 1000 times smaller than would be required if the GR correction were omitted -- and the "re-synch" would need to be performed thousands of times per day, which is simply not possible (hint: find out how many ground stations the GPS has and how often they are visible to a satellite). Of course one could convert thousands of "re-synchs" per day into a change in the clock's tick rate. But that _IS_ what the GR correction is. > [... further fantasies] As I have said so often, you prefer to just make stuff up and pretend it is true, rather than actually LEARNING about the subject. It is only to be expected that even the best clocks will change rates slightly on being sent into free fall. Atomic clocks tend to run a little faster when in orbit and so a small correction before launch makes subsequent software correcting considerably easier. Naturally, every clock is re-synched after being launched, the main criterion for successful GPS operation being that all orbiting clocks are in ABSOLUTE synch with each other. It is also important to know any ground clock rate and reading errors so that they can be software corrected out. > The GPS consists of three segments: space, ground, and user. You CLEARLY don't know what "chaotic" means. Yes, the planetary orbits are chaotic, but the Lyapunov time for the solar system is on the order of 5 million years. Chaos clearly cannot affect astronomical observations; since they have occurred over a period much shorter than the Lyapunov time, the chaos does not significantly affect the corresponding calculations, either. Moreover, competent people doing such calculations use errorbars, so the comparison with observations naturally INCLUDES the effects of chaos, however small or large they might be. All you ever do around here is demonstrate your colossal ignorance of the subjects you attempt to write about. Why bother? Tom Roberts

As it is, you are leveling "thought experiments" to criticize claims by some other theory, not relativity. A beam of 100 MeV neutrons, aimed horizontally just like the laser, will end up in a spot on the opposite wall in the same place as the laser spot.
