Ed Donkey excreted You need to understand a little about history to understand the meaning of a second. Before the invention of clocks, they just counted days and months by the motions of the sun and moon, and they counted the seasons. They saw people were aging and counted one's age by the number of winters they had experienced. Then, as shop keepers started appearing, they needed to tell their customers when they were open. So, the developed sun dials to divide a day into hours. Then shopkeepers and businesses needed to keep track of worker hours and toilet breaks, so they broke the hours into 60 "minutes" and, because "necessity is the mother of invention," mechanical clocks were invented to measure the 60 minutes within an hour. Later, greater precision was needed for certain tasks, so they divided a minute into 60 "seconds." So, what does a "second" measure? As stated before, a second is "the duration of 9,192,631,770 cycles of microwave light absorbed or emitted by the hyperfine transition of cesium-133 atoms in their ground state." And now, finally, the $64 question: what IS time, scientifically? No one knows for certain. We KNOW it is NOT just a "concept," since we KNOW the length of a second will change for an object (and ONLY for that object) if the object is in motion or is influenced by the effects of gravity. Concepts do not change when they move or get close to a gravitational mass. So, it appears that time is actually a property of matter. In my paper "Time Dilation without Relativity" I show that EXPERIMENTS indicate that Time is an effect of "particle spin." When particle spin slows down, it causes Time to slow down. Particle spin is the cause, Time is the effect. It is just what MANY EXPERIMENTS indicate. My paper suggests that we really need to figure out exactly how time works (instead of just wasting time by arguing about what Time is). My paper on Time Dilation: http://vixra.org/abs/1505.0234 Ed I'm not gonna read your juvenile scribblings

I agree, many nit pick on all sorts of details that are not actually important to the point being made. My favourite illustration of that is the "Big Bang Theory" joke. Q. Why did the chicken cross the road? A. I have a solution for that, but it only applies to spherical chickens in a vacuum. Sometimes the loose talk, is because one is only concerned with the global picture. Of course, sometimes the details do matter. -- Kevin Aylward http://www.kevinaylward.co.uk/gr/index.html http://www.kevinaylward.co.uk/qm/index.html

So, we have an > opinion versus opinion argument which is a total waste of time. But there's a crucial difference. My opinion is based on the belief that Einstein's second postulate refers to the stationary system, whereas your opinion is based on the belief that it does not refer to the stationary system. To resolve our disagreement, we consulted the text, and discovered that, in fact, Einstein's second postulate does refer to the stationary system. Hence, your opinion was based on an erroneous belief. So it wasn't a waste of time at all (at least not for you), because you've discovered that you were mistaken. > My theory does NOT differ from special relativity. Wait... we've discovered that you were mistaken in your understanding of Einstein's paper. He said the speed of light is c in the stationary system, regardless of the motion of the emitter in the stationary system. This is the opposite of what you have stated. So it's wrong for you to claim that your theory is the same as special relativity. > Special Relativity says that TIME runs slower in > Miami than in New York because the faster you move, > the slower time passes for you... Well, Einstein said "all other conditions being equal", which means he's neglecting things like the effect of gravity. He's just talking about an idealized spinning sphere, neglecting differences in gravitational potential, etc. His statement is true with those caveats. Now, it so happens that when the oblate shape of the spinning earth under the effect of gravity is taken into account, in accord with general relativity, the rate of time anywhere on the surface at sea level is essentially the same. This doesn't contradict special relativity, it simply means that the effects of gravity must be taken into account in this situation. > The speed of light Is MEASURED the same in "every > system of inertial coordinates." BUT it is NOT the same. That sentence doesn't make sense. Look, you have established a system of inertial coordinates, which means you have assigned specific values of x,t coordinates to every location every time. Now, a pulse of light propagates from one place and time (x1,t1) to another (x2,t2). The speed of the pulse in terms of these coordinates is (x2-x1)/(t2-t1). According to special relativity, this value is always c. This is true regardless of whether or not someone happens to "measure" it. > It is MEASURED the same because of Relativity and Einstein's > First Postulate: "the same laws of electrodynamics and optics... Ed, the clear and precise statements of Einstein's postulates are at the beginning of Section 2. You keep quoting the loose paraphrases in the introductory section of the paper, that don't convey the precise meanings. Please use Einstein's actual postulates, which are presented at the beginning of section 2. (The paraphrase in the introduction is correct, but it is confusing you, so it would help you to study the precise postulates, and then when you go back and re-read the introduction, you will understand it better.) > If I emit light at c in my frame of reference, that > light will NOT be c in your frame of reference UNLESS > you are absolutely stationary relative to me. That's not true, Ed, assuming we each define speeds in terms of the inertial coordinate systems in which we are at rest. This is the whole point of Einstein's paper. Your statement would be true if energy didn't have inertia, in which case inertial coordinate systems would be related by Galilean transformations, but since energy does have inertia, relatively moving system of inertial coordinates have skewed axes, in just such a way that the speed of light is c in terms of every such coordinate system. Again, this is the whole point of Einstein's paper, and it explains why E = mc^2 (which he pointed out a few months later). > My paper on Time Dilation lists the experiments which > show that TIME is different in different locations... Of course it is. Special relativity explains time dilation effects associated with speed, and general relativity explains time dilation effects related to gravity. All of these are perfectly consistent with the fact that, in terms of any local system of inertial coordinates, the speed of light is c. So, none of your experiments provides any evidence against this fact. To the contrary, they provide support for this fact.
