Again, you're talking in circles. What does "physical effect" mean to you?

A can of Coke sitting on the dash of a car has zero kinetic energy,
according to someone sitting in the car. According to someone standing
by a road sign as the car goes by, the can has quite a bit of kinetic
energy. Now, what CAUSED that change in kinetic energy, Ed? What
"physical effect" did the bystander by the road exert on the can to give
it all that kinetic energy? Hmmm?

If you can't answer that question for BASIC physics, then why are you
worried about relativity and what causes it?

Jeeze. There are 18 NEW messages waiting to be read this morning! And I haven't even finished going through what I opened yesterday.

A "physical effect" would be like heating an object to cause the physical effect of making the molecules move around faster. In time dilation, moving an object causes something within the object to slow down time for that object. I can speculate on what is happening, but you'd just call it "speculation." All that can be said for certain right now is that when an object moves at high speeds or is placed close to a gravitational mass, TIME SLOWS DOWN FOR THAT OBJECT AND *ONLY* FOR THAT OBJECT. Therefore, some physical element within the object MUST be physically affected by velocity or gravity.

Your argument is bogus and SILLY. The person in the car KNOWS that he, the car and the can of Coke have kinetic energy as a result of their velocity. The bystander also knows this. There is NO ILLUSION involved.

Ed

How does he know this? God whispered it in his ears?

The person in the car deduces (or measures) that the K energy of the
can is ZERO. The person standing on the side of the road deduces/measures that the K energy of the can is greater than zero. Now, what CAUSED that change in kinetic energy, Ed?

There is NO change in kinetic energy. There is only a mathematical exercise.

No. No math was performed in the above example. Only an actual experiment.
Stay seated in the 50 mph car...no problem. Stand in front of the car as it approaches... BIG difference in perspective, no?

Dont dodge the question: How can the speed of the can be both zero AND 50 mph?
Which is the real speed?

The real speed is 50 mph, of course. Nowhere in the universe would it be zero. It CANNOT be both zero and 50 mph. Only in some stupid math equation would someone be unable to distinguish between the reality of 50 mph and the fantasy of zero.

As I said, you just deny the last 400 years of physics.

It is quite usual for anti-relativist cranks to exhibit
complete misunderstanding of classical physics an to have
a pre-galilean conception of motion.

Oh dear...

Why isn't it then 50 + 1000 mph (speed of the equator wrt EC) ? Or why not
50 + 67000 MPH (orbital speed of the earth). Why must the 50 mph be the "real" one?

In the frame of the car, the speed of the can is zero; its laying right there in the cupholder as you drive...no?

idiot ken, is that you? :)

You are seated in front of your computer. Whats your speed? Are you moving wrt the sun?

It all depends upon what I'm trying to measure. If I want to measure my speed relative to the computer, it is ZERO. If I want to measure my speed (and the computer's speed) relative to some stationary point in the universe, then I need to use data related to the speed of the earth rotating on its axis, the speed of the earth as it goes around the sun, the speed of the sun as it orbits the center of the Milky Way galaxy, etc.

It seems that if I say I am not moving relative to my computer, you and others will argue that I am moving relative to the center of the galaxy. But what is the purpose of such an argument? It seems the purpose is only to create an argument.

Ok...we might be getting somewhere now...

Correct. Again, RELATIVE to the computer (or its associated frame), your speed is ZERO.

yes... See? RELATIVE to some other reference system (the sun, center galaxy or whatever), your speed may be different from zero.

See, "speed" is reference dependent (syn. observer dependent). You just said/implied that, right?

Both are correct. You are not moving wrt your computer, yet you are moving wrt the center of the galaxy. Now you are starting to make sense...

> But what is the purpose of such an argument?

To show you that some quantities (as speed here) are observer (frame) dependent. Speeds, positions, lengths, time, momentum, energy ...are observer dependent.

A simple exercise for a poor idiot:
Let's take YOU as our observer.
What is his speed (depending on observer-you)?

Your arguments are only valid in a world where no one cares about CAUSES and how things work. That is the world of Religio Mathematica, the religion of mathematics where people can BELIEVE that trees crash into cars and that nothing is real.

As YOU declared above, you did not use any "causes" in your arguments when you agreed that the can has both speeds 0 and 50 mph. You declared on your own that can has both speeds 0 and 50 mp w/o mentioning the cause. Speeds are frame dependent and dont have any "causes".

It's your misunderstanding of the word "cause" that is the problem here.

If you seriously believe this, Ed, then your problem is not with
post-Einstein relativity, but with classical physics since the 17th
century. All of that, you would say is "Religio Mathematica".

As an aside, Ed, I can now pretty confidently predict what the outcome
of your article submission to a peer-reviewed journal is going to be.
Anyone who disputes the concepts of basic classical mechanics from the
17th century and claims that all of that is a bastardization from
"Religio Mathematica" is going to pretty swiftly round-filed.

Ah, but Ed, you are arriving at one of the key understandings of
relativity, and not just Einstein's view of relativity but Galileo's!

The essence is: there is no motion aside from relative motion. There is
no absolute motion otherwise. And so OBVIOUSLY this motion is
observer-dependent, as are a number of other properties.

It does no good to say that a car on the highway is obviously the one
that is moving and the tree beside the road is obviously not moving. In
fact, those are NONSENSE statements. What are true statements are that
the car is moving relative to the surface of the earth, and the tree is
not moving relative to the surface of the earth.

As for the cause of relative motion, again, you have to be REALLY
careful about this. Forces are interactions between pairs of objects. If
there is a force involved, then this can introduce a change in relative
motion between two objects, but it is not true that one of the objects
acquires motion as a result of the force, and the other does not. In
fact, Newton's 3rd and 2nd laws would PROHIBIT that.

This is the same argument "rotchm" makes. It could be the tree that hit the car and not the car that hit the tree. I.e., no one cares about CAUSES, the only care about the physics. Nope. Most people care about causes, NOT the physics.

I understand that the laws of physics are not concerned with whether the tree ran into the car or the car ran into the tree, but in the REAL WORLD where people want to understand what happened and what CAUSED the accident, people DO CARE.

We live in different worlds. I'm an analyst, an inventor and an amateur scientist. I'm interested in how things work in this world. You seem to be only interested in how the math and physics work.

We do not live in a universe where there exists only two space ships passing one another and no one knows who is moving and who is not. We live in a universe where there are countless reference points to tell who is moving and who is not, PLUS there were people who used science and physics to CAUSE their space ships to move, so they KNOW who is moving and how fast relative to the universe around them.

Ed

Exactly! You Are starting to get it... Depending on the reference point (reference frame), then we get different results (speeds, say; the can has speed 0 in the car's frame and speed 50 mph in the ground frame).

Speeds, as time, is observer dependent.

You still don't get it.

In our REAL universe, the car and can in the car are going at the same speed. If someone in the car BELIEVES the can is standing still, he needs to have his head examined - or he is a mathematician who does not understand reality. Or maybe he is just trying to start an argument.

Correct: In the frame of the car, their speeds are zero, AS YOU AGREED TO.
In the frame of the ground their speeds are the same and both are 50 mph, AS YOU AGREED TO.

Is it not standing still in the cupholder? Is not your drink standing still on the table in the train (ever took a smooth train ride?). Is not your cup of coffee standing still on your breakfast table? (recall that the earth is rotating...).

"standing still", "position", "speed", etc are all relative to the reference frame. The can always remains 30 cm from the driver; yet the can is changing position relative to your dog sitting in the driveway.
