And, as an ANALYST, I look at the LOGIC, the EVIDENCE and the arguments, to try to determine which is right and which is wrong. It seems that physicist/mathematicians have been producing GARBAGE SCIENCE for a hundred years. They misinterpreted Einstein in 1905 and never looked back. There are scientific articles about the problem, but the articles just talk about string theory and multiple universes and how there is no evidence for either and neither can be proved or disproved, so they are NOT science, they are a waste of time. All I'm adding to the conversation is a ANALYTICAL finding that the problem goes back a lot farther. Allow me to make just a couple of observations. First, being an analyst does not in itself help, if you unwittingly carry mistaken preconceptions to the table that you've never questioned. All that happens is a result is that you analyze things according to a pre-existing worldview which may be, for all you know, simply wrong. There have been numerous examples of this in the conversation so far. Secondly, it appears you never quite managed to learn what Einstein said in 1905, and so it is natural I suppose that you perceived later writings to be in conflict with YOUR UNDERSTANDING of the 1905 paper. For example, you do not quite understand the relativity of simultaneity and of synchronization. Third, as it turns out, I agree with you that string theory and multiverses are quite possibly not even science. You're not alone in this view, and there are a number of high quality physicists that have criticized string theory for exactly these reasons. Furthermore some of the really firm predictions of string theory, like supersymmetric partner particles, have just not borne out, and so the theory is at least on those grounds apparently wrong. However, I don't think it's fair to say that the whole exercise has been a waste of time. After all, part of the work of science is to develop a hypothesis TO THE POINT where it does make solid predictions and can be tested. I think that's what a lot of physicists would say they have been doing for the last couple of decades. If you suddenly stop your car on the passing lane of the highway and a truck that is moving behind you rear-ends you, then you are the cause of the accident according to "common sense" rules, even though it was the truck that was moving. What Galileo pointed out is that whether you are moving or stationary is an accident of choice of reference frame. Thus if there is a collision between A and B, a simple switch of reference frames will flip from cases where A is moving and B is still, where B is moving and A is still, or where A and B are both moving. And the point is that the physics is identical in all three cases! And so when you talk about "causes", a physically sensible meaning of cause has to be independent of which of those three cases you're looking at. And in fact, these two could well be the SAME collision, just viewed from two different reference frames. The amount of stuff you have acquired on a subject is not a measure of how much you have LEARNED about a subject. There was a fella a while back, now deceased, who had a collection of high end books on gravity and general relativity. He had taken the spine off Misner, Thorne, and Wheeler, and laid out sections of the book on a large folding table for examination. But when it came down to it, he actually stopped reading on page 21 when it said something he did not believe was true, and on top of that, he did not really have a grip on what was said in the first 20 pages either. As I keep saying, your view of science is of no interest to me. I use the "scientific method" which begins with a question like the two I provided above. Mathematics does not become involved until you have an answer and want to validate the answer by making a prediction. Ed
