The original problem here is measuring the length of a rod with a ruler that is being accelerated. Ken, really. In the original problem, the direction of the ruler's acceleration is along the line of the rod. Now, sit down with a crayon and a big piece of paper and draw your rocket, draw the rod on the floor of the rocket, and draw the vector for the acceleration. When the floor of the rocket accelerates one end, the other end won't start accelerating until L/c seconds later (or even later than that, it actually depends on the speed of sound in the material). Since when do rockets have cellars? Assuming you meant hanging from the ceiling or something, pretty much the same thing. The top of the rod experiences a force pulling it, but the bottom end of the rod doesn't accelerate until L/c seconds later (or more, depending on the speed of sound in the rod). Only difference is whether the accelerating force is a push or pull.

Including the speed of sound. If I start accelerating one end of a rod with length L, the other end CANNOT start accelerating until L/c seconds later, because that is the least time possible for the acceleration force to be felt at the far end. THAT is what I meant by the far end "seeing" the acceleration.
