You are, of course, aware of the Slinky™ toy. Lay out the toy, partially stretched, on a tabletop. Pull on one end. A wave travels from the pulled end to the opposite end. It is not until the wave reaches the opposite end that the opposite end starts to move. It doesn't quite work the same with a push because the Slinky™ toy is under tension, and there is friction between the Slinky™ and the tabletop. But for an upright ruler, the argument works for both pushing and pulling.

You and Roberts claimed that you can't measure the length after acceleration.....I showed you that laying the ruler and the rod sideway will enable such measurement. What's wrong with that?

Well, again, there is no guy in a rocket. There is a ruler or two marker objects attached to a rocket. But essentially, yes, the measurement of the length of the rod using this accelerated ruler will result in a different number. Notice that this is much different than saying that the measurement can't be done. > >> >> Do you want to try to go back and find out what we actually did say, so >> that you can quote it exactly? >> >>> ....I showed you that laying the ruler and the rod sideway will enable such >>> measurement. The two times are the same by DEFINITION. Instead of a ruler, just put a marker object at each endpoint. Both marker objects have synchronized clocks. By agreement, at time t=0 both marker objects start accelerating by the same amount 'a' by firing a rocket. You maintain then that at some time t>0 one of the marker objects would still be co-located with an endpoint (considering that acceleration means change of velocity, and velocity means change of position)?

It will take L/c seconds (or more) before the other end starts to accelerate. > You maintain then that at some time t>0 one of the marker objects would >still be co-located with an endpoint (considering that acceleration means >change of velocity, and velocity means change of position)? Well, with the way it's worded, it doesn't matter if one end starts accelerating before the other. The only time the marks are aligned is at t=0, because v=0. Once the rod starts moving, the marks are no longer aligned. The fact that the marks are aligned when the rod hasn't moved yet isn't interesting.

So obviously there are two rockets, as well as two (synchronized) clocks. Now I ask you again : You maintain then that at some time t>0 one of the marker objects would still be co-located with an endpoint (considering that acceleration means change of velocity, and velocity means change of position)?

I already answered this in what you snipped. At T=0+, the acceleration becomes nonzero but v and x are still 0. The marks do align because v is still 0, but as soon as the rod starts moving neither mark aligns. Anyway, you seem to want the answer for what's known as Bell's spaceship paradox. The Wikipedia article probably explains what happens in SR better than I can. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bell%27s_spaceship_paradox

You are using a peculiar notation here with T=0+. If you mean by that T>0 then clearly v>0 and x>0 as well if the acceleration started at T=0. So an observer on either of the marker objects will see the (originally co-located) endpoint of the rod having moved away some distance when his clock shows T>0. Now can we also agree that both observers will see the respective endpoint (the one they were originally co-located with) having moved away by the same distance, provided they applied the same acceleration and check the distance at the same time T (according to their identical and synchronized clocks)?

You shouldn't just end the discussion when it gets interesting, which it will get here if you would bother to answer my question: Now can we also agree that both observers will see the respective endpoint (the one they were originally co-located with) having moved away by the same distance, provided they applied the same acceleration and check the distance at the same time T (according to their identical and synchronized clocks)?

T=0+ is standard mathematical notation for the limit of T as T approaches 0 from above; T=0- is the same but approaching from below (in books, the + and - are superscripts). Apply those limits to the physical situation, and you get Michael's description above. It is necessary to distinguish between the two limits here because there is a discontinuous change at t=0. Nobody is trying to go backwards in time. That is just how you treat that type of math problem. As I just wrote, go review the section on mathematical limits. > And if the acceleration starts at T=0, you'll have v>0 and and x>0 for T>0. We're talking about T=0 with a>0. Since v=at, v=0.
