If I ask you to test whether the length of an object depends on the relative speed to you, you measure the coordinates x1 and x2 of its endpoints on your ruler grid when the object is at rest first, then you accelerate and after time t you measure again the coordinates x1 and x2 of its endpoints. This is solely done in terms of your own length and time standards, and you don't have to ask anybody else for this. The question is only what do YOU measure for the object's length in the two cases.

First of all, it is not L = 1/2 * a * t^2 but x1 = 1/2 * a * t^2 x2 = L + 1/2 * a * t^2 so x2-x1 = L at all times. If that would not be true, you would have different accelerations for the endpoints, which would contradict the fact that both endpoints of the object are at rest relatively to each other.

It is not an unjustified extrapolation but just an application of the initial definition Einstein made as well: if an observer moves with velocity v relatively to a rod, this implies that he moves with velocity v to either endpoint, and the same applies to the acceleration. Otherwise, the concept of moving with regard to a different reference frame would not make any sense at all. If you had a rod that would be expanding due to heat absorption for instance, then an observer would indeed see different velocities (and possibly accelerations) for the two endpoints, but such a 'flexi-rod' would not qualify as a reference frame.
