I don't wish to argue about the conventional answer but there could be another way to look at this. If number was considered to exist as two separate domains, positive or negative, then -6/-2 would be 6/2 in the negative domain which would produce the answer 3 in the negative domain..or -3 as we know it. That idea would not appear to apply in the science we know but might have philosophical implications. > Tom Roberts --

Well, it isn't as stupid as people like moron-y might think. Number was invented to count objects. What actually is the philosophy behind the idea of negative numbers? The concept of a negative domain is no sillier than that of negative time or an imaginary plane. Subtraction is really an addition of a negative number. If negative numbers are just positive numbers that exist in the negative domain, then -a*-b should = -ab. ....'ab' being a positive number in the negative domain. Consider a simple electrical example where I = V/R. The power, W, is V^2/R. Take away some volts, -V and you take away some power, -W, even though -V*2 should be positive. --

DeltaW = W_final - W_initial = (V_final)^2 R - (V_initial)^2 R = (V_initial + -V)^2 R - (V_initial)^2 R Now, there's a good jump start on how to do the math correctly. Can you > finish the steps? I was quite aware of that. This is a philosophical issue not a mathematical one. Just imagine there is an entirely negative universe as well as an entirely positive one. In that case, nothing is negative. Everything is positive but in the negative domain. A negative anything is not compatible with a positive one. The fact remains that the lost power, -W results from a loss of voltage, -V even though the voltage term is a quadratic in any power equation. --

Do tell. >It means that all these years you are a moron. So you still don't know how to compute (-6)/(-2) afterall. Meanwhile, my kid, who was learning how to do math like (-6)/(-2) at the same time you were first struggling with the concept a few years ago, has moved on to more advanced grades. Leaving you in the dust, so to speak.

So you admit that you don't understand the standard process of setting up a coordinate system for this problem. I'll do this: Set up a coordinate system, any coordinate system you want, Cartesian, cylindrical or polar, whatever you can understand. Tell us the coordinates for the two ends of the rod of length L. Tell us, using your chosen coordinates, the positions and times for the two x_emission positions and t_emission times when the two pulses of light (one from each end) were sent. Now, tell us the x_arrival and t_arrival positions and times for the two pulses when they reach the other ends of the rod. (Prediction: Ken will either ignore this entirely or blather about it without ever setting up the problem like I asked. Because he can't! He doesn't know enough geometry to set up this problem, much less solve it. Just like how Ken was never able to answer the trivial math problem, what is the value of (-6)/(-2). )

Now, tell us the > x_arrival and t_arrival positions and times for the two pulses when > they reach the other ends of the rod. idiot.....the rod is one object. Therefore x-emission=0 for both ends and x-arrival=L for both ends. In any case x in the LT does not mean the different ends of the rod. It means the distance of the rod from the observer's coordinate system. > > (Prediction: Ken will either ignore this entirely or blather about > it without ever setting up the problem like I asked.
