There are interesting studies of mental pathogens in general. One
interesting finding is that they don't correlate with the IQ score.
True, there are some genuine and obvious cases of deficiencies in
that department but on average this is not a significant factor,
apparently.

It seems the IQ test measures the ability to turn many abstract concepts
reasonably efficiently in your head. But if there is no ability to rank those
concepts, the person starts drowning in a mass of mirages, all of them
managed mentally very skillfully but also largely pointlessly.

This is ignoring genuine mental disorders which is an entirely different topic.

There is no doubt an inverse correlation.
Crackpots tend to be intelligent people.
Nothing wrong with them, except for just this tiny little crack...

The crazier the crackpottery,
the more intelligence is required to find at least verbal explanations
for all the obvious inconsistencies.

Of course not, that's just IQ propaganda.
IQ tests measure the ability to solve certain kinds
of rather trivial constructed puzzles quickly.
They only correlate (not too strongly) with real intelligence,
which involves dealing with real problems
in a reasonable amount of time.
(and/or very difficult problems in a very long time)

Yes, but some people are afflicted with both kinds.

Not quite, trash, you don't really need any intelligence for

Apparently, there isn't. Gad Saad and others wrote a lot about it.

> Crackpots tend to be intelligent people.

Intelligence per se offers no protection against mental pathogens.
That's another surprising finding, although not anything new: see
e.g. the late-19th century Russian nihilism, mostly carried by the
elites, or the 1930s Germany which just a decade earlier had been
at the apex of culture and science. For a more recent example, see
e.g. Noam Chomsky saying that those who refuse to get the
covid19 vaccine should be put in prison, or Sam Harris saying that he
wouldn't care if Hunter Biden even had corpses of children in his
basement, as long as this would prevent Trump from becoming
US president.

I have also a small exhibit of similar personal experiences with
very intelligent people in the San Francisco Bay Area (one of my
favourites is my losing a lawyer friend because I was trying to
tell her that presumption of innocence was a good thing [yes], and she
is no meanie in her field, she e.g. refused a Google job offer because
"they pay too little and are too full of themselves", as she put it).

> Nothing wrong with them, except for just this tiny little crack...

Yes, it's usually in the form of a very narrow blind spot.

There is more to it than that but I agree in general. What *is* known
is that, whatever IQ measures, it correlates with what's usually called
"success in life in the western-style developed economy". There are some
other odd correlations but none of it implies anything about what IQ
actually measures. Its name comes from its origin as a *children* test,
where it obviously measures "intelligence" but that's simply because at
that stage even the most crude tool will work. But when someone came up
with the idea of applying the test to adults, they made a mistake of keeping
the old *name*, so the test acquired this random connotation with "intelligence"
in the general population and it's now very difficult to weed this misnomer out.
And just this *name* is now really the only reason no researcher will get funds
to study this test properly because of all of its non-PC correlations. If this test
was called "the X-factor test", nobody would be bothered by those correlations
and we could study it properly.

> They only correlate (not too strongly) with real intelligence,
> which involves dealing with real problems
> in a reasonable amount of time.

There are many odd factoids about the ability to manipulate abstract
concepts. For example, there is a statistically significant
difference in *3D* imagination between boys and girls (forget what age,
I think kindergarten) but there is no such difference in *2D* imagination.
So this is an example of the level of detail of such studies.

A lot of it is about knowing where one's *knowledge boundaries* lie.
No scientist can work without the firm possession of this faculty.

I speculate that Uncle Adolf had a higher IQ than any of the top nazis,
except Speer. His 'master race' obsession was clearly irrational,
though not necessarily schizo, in the precise sense.

Regarding the original topic:

I had a good laugh today. I read something how one of the subjects of
the original Dunning-Kruger research was a would-be bank robber in the
1990s. He went into a bank demanding money, with no mask or any other
visible attempt to hide his face. He even deliberately smiled for the
security cameras. He was totally confounded when later that day, the FBI
showed up at his house and arrested him. He said "But I used the juice!"

It turns out "the juice" was lemon juice. He smeared his face with lemon
juice. Lemon juice can be used as a form of invisible ink. He thought
that covering his face with lemon juice made him invisible!

I'm trying to decide if any of our own Dunning-Kruger examples here, who
all think they're smarter than all the physicists over the last 100+
years by claiming relativity is wrong, is actually dumber than the bank
robber. Sure they're all dumb, but are any that dumb?
