It is strange.

A very timely and insightful question, Laurence.  I have just returned from LIGO on the Hanford Nukular Reservation and will file a report on this and other topics next week.  I saw the 2017 Nobel prize--donated by one of the LIGO recipients--on display there.  Engraved on the side of the small oak pedestal, atop which is affixed Nobel metal, is a wave-like representation of the gravity waves that supposedly escaped two black holes.  Said waves making their way to Washington and Louisiana, 7 milliseconds apart.  Much more later.

Of course they haven't.  How can you possibly detect space-time distortion when you and your gear are contained inside space-time???  It would be as if a creature made of water trying claimed to detect longitudinal waves in water using instruments made of water (say an amoeba-like creature)   If anything, LIGO will prove luminiferous aether and Fitzgerald contraction.

I don't think they can be sure of any of the detections when they presuppose the speed is c. Otherwise, gravity could be some sort of wave or behave like a wave and be detected.

I have been "preaching" in these environs for quite some time that
nobody knows what gravity actually is, not even in terms of a proper
model. All we know is the effects of gravity that directly concern us.

As such unless and until we have a much better grasp on what gravity
actually is, or some substantially useful model of it, we can only
hazard some pretty good guesses about things like black holes.

Attempting to explain why gravity escapes a black hole while light
and matter do not can only push us towards attempting to better
understand gravity with a solution only in sight once we achieve
such understanding. This is, IMO, a cart and horse thing.

The creating some "pie in the sky" crankish theory is wasteful
at best. I think solving this particular riddle will go quite far
in resolving other issues such as whether or not some hitherto
unknown form of aether exists. If it does, perhaps someone with
more knowledge than I might look at this problems in terms of
a phenomena loosely related to buoyancy. I do not presume to
propose a solution, only humbly suggest one possible direction
for extensive study. Even then I believe solving this puzzle
will require a "eureka" moment.

Yes, precisely what it is.
And because the speed is c they can use the time delays
between detectors to triangulate the direction to the source.

With some luck they will also find another transient effect
at that location, for example a gamma flash.
The coincidence again confirms that the speed is c,
to extreme accuracy,

I was there, in the lobby, watching the fancy screen display of the live data coming in from 200 yards away, from Louisiana, and from an inferior device somewhere in Europe.  The mirrors regularly "go out of lock" which is duly noted on the display.  All oscillations are admittedly from trucks, footfall, wind, etc...except for about one event per month.  They claim to have detected 90 or so gravitational oscillations so far.  About 10 per year.

It was explained to me that they failed for around 10 years.  Then they got a new tranche of tax-payer money for "major upgrading" (of salaries?) and within two days of spending all the money they claimed to have detected the first, and Nobel-winning gravity wave.  This sequence of events is a transparently phony as Hunter's special prosecutor appointment today.

I purchased a LIGO tee-shirt and two LIGO comic books: one in English and its translation in the Language of the Black Feet Indians of the Central Plains of N. America.

It does seem like a boondoggle to me. How much must gravity diminish given the inverse square rule, yet they claim to detect undispersed ripples?

Yup.  They claim 1/1000th of a nukulus sensitivity.  Or roughly 1/100th of a proton's width physical movement detection.  And this at 350 degrees Kelvin.  Absolutely ridiculous.

Since I don't know much about it, can you explain why they can't detect the gravity from other planets in our own solar system?

It was explained to me by the docent on duty (an English-History major, his first month on the job) LIGO is a straight up MMX device that measures a change in the length of one of the arms as a gravity wave goes by.

If the sun and the moon can turn the entire Pacific Ocean into a gravity long wave detector--10 foot tides here in Puget Sound--why don't the two LIGO detectors (Richland and Livingston) exhibit differences of at least 1/100th of a proton four times a day?
