that the difference between Special Relativity and Newtonian mechanics 
is small except at relativistic speeds. Indeed, that's what a 
relativistic speed is - a speed at which the difference between SR and 
Newtonian mechanics is not small.

Whether the difference is measurable depends on the sensitivity of the 
measurement.

You use the phrase "share the velocity of the source", but that isn't the point of disagreement, because we can describe your disagreement without even mentioning any "source", as follows:

Consider two standard systems of inertial coordinates, S and S', represented by grids of standard rulers and clocks, with each set being at rest and inertially synchronized in their respective frames.  Suppose S' is moving with speed u in the negative x direction in terms of S.

You believe the answer is u+v, whereas it is actually (u+v)/(1 + uv/c^2). So, your disagreement isn't fundamentally about "sharing the velocity of the source".  It's about how standard inertial coordinate systems are related to each other.

Notice that if S and S' were related by a Galilean transformation, your belief would be correct, but if those two standard inertial coordinate systems are related by a Lorentz transformation, your belief is incorrect.  So this is really what you ought to focus on, if you want to resolve the disagreement:  Are standard inertial coordinate systems related by Galilean transformations
or by Lorentz transformations? 

The answer depends on whether energy has inertia.  Spoiler:  It does, but Galileo and Newton did not know this - not

The GPS corrects for the atomic clocks moving faster in lower gravity after inductively obtaining the data of 38 microseconds per day and then relativity pretends to explain it and claims that it includes 7 microseconds for SR. There is no use for GR or SR in this. This is called instrumental error not relativity.
