Emission theory refers speed to the velocity of an emitter. Aether theory refers it to the hypothetical medium aether.  

I am suggesting to define it simply as a ratio distance divided by time of flight from emitter to a location under of consideration in particular a receiver. Thereby distance means the linear difference between location of arrival at the moment of arrival and the location of emission at the moment of emission. 

Notice: 
I just refer to a possibly changing distance, not to a hypothetical frame of coordinate in space.
I also don't directly refer to any speed of emitter, medium, or observer. 

What's wrong with this definition?

That is wrong, because contradicts directly many of experience.

For example the Sagnac:
c for any local observer,
due to the emission fallacy condition alone:
light propagates wrt the emiter with the speed c always..
thus this model provides:
dt = L/c - L/c = 0;

and the measured difference is not null, but:
dt = L/c-v - L/c+v, perfectly;

thus the emmision model is wrong.

Of course, the emission model of light is wrong. 

You didn't notice: 
My definition of the speed of light doesn't directly refer to v of emitter or observer. You are sharing Einstein's thinking when writung c-v and c+v. My definition is different and doesn't need the non-causality of Poincaré synchronisation.

The point is that there is no real value, other than as a historical 
artifact, to measure time and space with different units. As is 
described in a wonderful analogy, this would be like measuring east-west 
distances in miles and north-south distance in kilometers, just because 
you've always done it that way.

It is perfectly acceptable to measure time and distance both in meters, 
or both in seconds.

In physics we observe the occurrence of events. An event is described by the place where it occurred and the time when it occurred.

If we send a light signal from a point (x1,y1,z1) at time t1, on a frame of reference K, to another point (x2,y2,z2) arriving at time t2 on the same frame of reference K, we can write the following relation, which equals the distance between the points and the distance covered by the light:

(x2-x1)^2+(y2-y1)^2+(z2-z1)^2-c^2(t2-t1)^2=0

From this relation, we can generalize to what is called the interval between any two events E1 (coordinates x1, y1, z1 and t1) and E2 (coordinates x2, y2, z2 and t2):

s_12^2=c^2(t2-t1)^2-(x2-x1)^2-(y2-y1)^2-(z2-z1)^2

From the principle of invariance of the speed of light it follows that if the interval between two events is zero in one coordinate system, then it will be equal to zero in all other systems.

If two events are infinitely close to each other, the interval is:

ds^2=c^2dt^2-dx^2-dy^2-dz^2

So the answer to the original question, given that x1=x2, y1=y2 and z1=z2, is the interval:

s_12^2=c^2(t2-t1)^2

No but it is an INTERVAL. An interval is a jargon term that combines 
spatial distance and temporal duration. Some people get a little sloppy 
talking about spacetime intervals, using distance instead.

Well, "arbitrary" is in the eye of the beholder. I'll give you an 
example. Some people say that most other variables allow values from 
minus to plus infinity, but not temperature. Temperature as an absolute 
zero. Why? Does this seem arbitrary?

The split domains of spacetime is a direct consequence of its hyperbolic 
structure, reflected in the fact that the signature of the metric has 
mixed signs. Now, you might argue from the basis of simplicity saying, 
"Wouldn't it be simpler if the metric did NOT have mixed signs?" Yes, 
but then again, nature would be simpler if it had only two spatial 
dimensions rather than three, but that doesn't make it right.

Anybody might have some native expectations for how nature is. In the 
end, though, the only way to tell whether those expectations are in fact 
in line with reality is to test the consequences of those expectations 
against experimental observations. Period, end of story.

Well, rectriction to a line makes the issue more transparent. I just don't see SR a necessity.

Let me ask you the question a different way.
Given that the measure of success of a theory is how well it agrees with 
experiment, and given that SR agrees superbly well with experiment, then 
what's the resistance to accepting SR as a successful theory?
Is there SOME OTHER basis by which you judge a theory and according to 
which SR is inferior to some other explanation? If so, what is that basis?
