No. It is slightly different. 'Aether' is assumed to be an invisible substance, which fills the entire universe. But this would create an absolute frame of reference, hence violates relativity. But we could do a certain trick: I assume a 'relativistic aether'. That could be spacetime itself. The things we see (matter, waves and fields) are internal 'structures' of this 'aether'. The structures are created by a mechanism, that is somehow similar to a pair of scissors. The pointlike elements of spacetime could behave in antagonistic fashions, which could add to nothing. But if these two sides get an angle (scissors is opening) then something is visible. Now the verticals on Earth have an angle and therefore these structures move down. TH

Yes. But that has nothing whatsoever to do with "aether drift", it is merely
gravitation-induced strains in the apparatus. Note it is completely impossible
to avoid such strains -- no matter what you do, the intrinsic weight of the arms
will induce strains as the apparatus is rotated vertically.
For instance, the formulas on the webpage below estimate a 1-meter
long steel rod will change length by ~ 0.2 microns (independent of its
diameter); for visible light that is 1 full fringe per half rotation.
http://www.engineeringtoolbox.com/weight-beam-stress-strain-d_1937.html
One can compute what GR predicts for an IDEAL Michelson interferometer rotated
vertically (here "ideal" means its arms do not change length); the result is
TRILLIONS of times smaller than any modern interferometer could detect (which is
thousands of times more sensitive than the device Grusenick built).

The interferometer of Martin Grusenick showed the greatest effect at a position of 45° in respect to the vertical. This is not the position for the greatest stress upon the tubes. If these aluminium tube would bend under the weight of the plywood screen, they could eventually bend a few microns. But this would not alter the interference pattern, since bending would move the screen sideways, which is irrelevant for the pattern. It the tubes get longer by a few fractions of a millimetre under their own weight (plus that of this piece of plywood), the greatest stress would be in vertical position. Only this is not the position with the greatest change of fringes. So I would reject your explanation and assume something different. Maybe you are right and the effect is actually caused by gravity, but not as effect on aluminium tubes, but on light. .. TH

You OBVIOUSLY do not understand how this interferometer works, and how extremely sensitive it is. IT is MORE sensitive to mirror orientation than it is to arm length. Tom Roberts

I have not promoted 'aether wind' or similar.
I had a different idea of kind of 'relativistic aether'. I call that
'structured spacetime':
https://docs.google.com/present/view?id=dd8jz2tx_3gfzvqgd6
So spacetime is regarded as real physical system and the world we
observe as a subset of its internal structure, seen from our specific
perspective.
These structures are created, because the constituents ('pointlike
elements') are interconnected similar to how quaternions are multiplied.
This could be interpreted as rotations, which these 'elements' distribute.
These rotations have a certain symmetry, which require two rotations to
return to the previous state. This enables such states to oscillate, if
the two aspects do not match.
Now the spherical form of the Earth creates an angle between the
verticals and therefore an apparent force on such structures towards
the centre of the Earth.
But there is nothing moving, since such structures are internal features
of spacetime, even if we call them 'things'.
'aether wind' is meant as 'movement of some invisible substance (aether)'.

At a point on the surface of the earth, the earth's yearly velocity (30,000 m/s) produce an ether drift (wind) that is propagating tangent to a point on the surface of the earth, in the western and eastern directions and varies in magnitude from 0 to 30,000 m/s, depending on the time. Michelson is testing for the existence of the ether drift using two light rays that are used to form an interference pattern. One light ray propagates parallel to the direction of the ether drift which would affected the velocity of the parallel light ray; the second light ray propagates perpendicular to the ether drift and is unaffected by the ether drift. At midnight on the surface of the earth, the ether wind would be propagating in the eastern direction at 30,000 m/s; consequently, the light ray that is propagating parallel to the ether wind, in a eastern direction, would propagate at a faster velocity and the perpendicular light ray's velocity would be unaffected by the perpendicular direction of the ether wind. Both light rays propagate towards two separate mirrors then are reflected back and recombined to form an interference effect. Rotating Michelson's experimental apparatus, at various angles, both light rays would be affected by the ether wind which would alter the velocities of both light waves and change the interference effect but rotating the interferometer does not alter the interference effect which represents the negative result of Michelson's experiment but the velocity of light (3 x 108) is four order of magnitude greater than the maximum velocity of the ether wind (300,000 m/s), at midnight, which would not affect the diffraction pattern and proves Michelson's experiment is physically invalid. Nonsense. The speed of the Solar System is about 500 km/s and almost pependiculary to the ecliptic plane. So, the Earth's motion has no impact on the ether's wind, because Earth moves along the ecliptic: V^2 + v^2 = const. where: V = 500km/s, and v = 30km/s. the final speed is: sqrt(V^2 + v^2) = sqrt(500^2 + 30^2) = 500.9 km/s, which is still 500 km/s, up to a promile of error only!

. . "The undulatory theory of light assumes the existence of a medium called the ether, whose vibrations produce the phenomena of heat and light, and which is supposed to fill all space. According to Fresnel, the ether, which is enclosed in optical media, partakes of the motion of these media, to an extent depending on their indices of refraction. For air, this motion would be but a small fraction of that of the air itself and will be neglected." (Michelson, p. 120). "Assuming then that the ether is at rest, the earth moving through it, the time required for light to pass from one point to another on the earth's surface, would depend on the direction in which it travels." (Michelson, p. 120). "The interpretation of these results is that there is no displacement of the interference bands. The result of the hypothesis of a stationary ether is thus shown to be incorrect, and the necessary conclusion follows that the hypothesis is erroneous." (Michelson, p. 128). . .

Just the light looks like was dragged by the moving medium, due to the standard waves principles alone! > "Assuming then that the ether is at rest, the earth moving through it, the time required for light to pass from one point to another on the earth's surface, would depend on the direction in which it travels." (Michelson, p. 120). Wrong! The Sun's speed in the ether is almost 500km/s, and in the direction almost perpendicular to the Earth's motion around the Sun, so: ether-wind-speed = sqrt(V-Sun^2 + v-E-S^2) = const > "The interpretation of these results is that there is no displacement of the interference bands. The result of the hypothesis of a stationary ether is thus shown to be incorrect, and the necessary conclusion follows that the hypothesis is erroneous." (Michelson, p. 128). Michelson was a stupid, untrained with the math man, similarly like Einstein and many other. We live in 3D full space, not in the 2D ecliptic plane only.

Too bad you can't prove the non-existence of the Aether. Even worse. Relativity in its childhood was derived with Aether in mind. ______________________________________________________________ Newton proved that light propagating through a glass vacuum tube proves Huygens' optical ether, composed of matter, does not exist. Also, Maxwell's massless electromagnetic field that is propagating at the velocity of light cannot be used to represent Huygens' stationary ether, composed of matter. Huygens' ether particles remain stationary after the light wave propagates through the ether. . .

However it is important to note that the aether was only proved not stationary. the interpretation that this proved it does not exist is also flat wrong.
