Agreed, and this is why physicists are pretty clear about laying out
distinct meanings for them.

As distinctive as to say 'real' doesn't mean 'real'.

Have to know the lingo as physicists use it, Peter. Sorry.

That's true in the one article you're thinking of. Elsewhere he said
differently. Moreover, Einstein is not the sole source of what
relativity says.

1887 was 129 years ago. How old are you? By the time you were BORN,

For a long time now, mainstream science has had a consensus that the
aether has no role to play. It's only die-hards like you who continue to
try to argue that it exists.

Sylvia.

Please read Paul's reply further down. He is another die hard who believes in the aether. Einstein and Michelson did so too.

I think you will find that the ambivalence has been resolved in the 129
years since 1887.

On the contrary, the ambivalence has been reinforced.

I disagree. This is based on READING recent books, which I gather you

Truth in science is a difficult subject. Most certainly you will find
'truth' in nature and not in books.

What is written in books represent ideas, that someone else had, who
wrote that book.

To read such ideas could eventually help, but it is not guaranteed, that
former ideas are better than newer - or especially the own.

If you want to create something new, you cannot use former ideas,
written in books. Instead you need to make up your own mind and try to
find some new look at old problems.

In a way I think, that lack of knowledge would eventually help creativity.

The downside would be, that almost all such 'creative ideas' are plain
wrong, but not because the lack of knowledge, but because they would
violate known features of nature.

So some knowledge is required, but not to much, since this would hinder
creativity.

Thomas, you are spot on. If we relied on established thinking we would be still living in caves.

'Advance the civilization' is something a single person could do by
inventing something.

E.g. a new way of braking bread could help to achieve better solutions
and that would in fact advance civilization.

Most achievements would generate only very little progress. But things
add up and many small contributions would also generate significant
progress.

Inventions are by definition new, hence cannot be based on previous
ideas. In fact something new does somehow require to break earlier believes.

So, strict traditionalism would hinder any advance of civilization.

Dono swings in the trees, Bod lives in a cave, AE lives in the spacetime fantasy land but the RC enjoys the real world.

You're a little off base to think that books only contain ideas. That
would be philosophy. What is recorded in physics books are a combination
of ideas, quantitative predictions from the ideas, and comparison of
those ideas with data.

It is those last two things that define science, because it is nature
that resolves which ideas are good and which are bad, through experiment.

Peter, you should know better. In the English dictionary are listed
several definitions of words, and which one is appropriate depends on
context. If you use the inappropriate definition for a given context,
then this is your own mistake.

No, Peter, what he said is that it depends on what you mean by "real".
And here he explained what HE means by real, and you insist on taking a
different definition.

Please tell me your version how MMX, the experiment in the lab, is affected by LC.
