Maxwell used TWENTY equations and believed in the luminiferous aether. Heaviside distilled them down to the four equations we have today. In them, the speed of light works out to be c = 1/sqrt(eps0*mu0). By the GT, the light from a moving light source should be measured as moving at c + v, where v is the velocity of the moving source. Experiment shows that it is still c. Also, vacuum capacitors, which are dependent on eps0 (the permittivity of free space), do not change value when moving and inductors, which are dependent on mu0 (the permeability of free space) don't either. Yet the earth is moving around the sun at about 30 km/sec, so the speed of light should be anisotropic if the GT were correct (this is what Michelson and Morley were trying to detect. Today, experiments show that the speed of light is isotropic to at least 10,000 times smaller than the speed of the earth. Furthermore, Heaviside derived E = p*c for light from Maxwell's equations. Classical 19th century physics based on the GT considered kinetic energy to be equal to 0.5*m*v^2; however, E = p*c contradicts that. The GT is a good approximation to reality for most everyday conditions, but it fails to account for bodies moving at high speeds. Particle accelerators refute the GT also as they show that adding energy to particles do not result in the increase in their velocity according to kinetic energy = 0.5*m*v^2.

The thing I like about coordinates is that they work fairly well in proving scientists wrong.

What Maxwell believed in was absolute time, along with all other scientists of his day. Maxwell died in 1879, so he never used anything other than the Galilean transformation equations. No one until Einstein imagined clocks with different rates. Time was an absolute, and a second was a second was a second, the building block upon which the entire universe was founded. So then scientists discovered faster and slower clocks, but instead of following the axioms of algebra, they followed their concept of absolute time, right up to the present day. That is fine. There is nothing wrong with the idea of absolute time. Some of your better scientists like Newton and Galileo could have done the mathematics if they had been told, We have discovered by experiment that a moving clock is slower than a clock at rest, or, We have discovered by experiment that clocks at different altitudes have different rates. Newton and Galileo would have just said, Well, we want to use the rotation of the earth as the standard for time, so we will choose a clock at sea level as the standard and convert the times of any clocks not agreeing with that clock to its time before using the Galilean transformation equations and the concept of absolute time. Then, mathematically, they would not get all confused the way you are by a clock that is slower in S'. Newton and Galileo were good enough at junior high algebra to see that t'=t means the same amount of seconds counted by the same rate of time on both sides of the equation. But you are saying that James Clerk Maxwell was a more modern scientist. He would have been all confused about the slower or faster clock in S'. I don't really think so. I think James Clerk Maxwell was also fairly good at junior high algebra. One thing we know for certain about James Clerk Maxwell, he never used anything but the Galilean transformation equations. He died eight years before the Michelson-Morley experiment took place. We common people do not really care what you think happens in particle accelerators. If you cannot work simple junior high algebra, then we do not believe you have any idea of what is happening in particle accelerators. As far as we are concerned, you are just wasting our tax dollars with these expensive toys. In any event, until you people can carry on a conversation in some other way than hysterical insults, we have to consider you a complete waste of time.

Right, which means he did not realize the problem his equations for electrodynamics would cause with respect to the core principle of invariance of laws of physics with inertial reference frame. He did not have time in his life to figure out there was a problem here. That is why other people after him came along and figured out there was an issue. -- Odd Bodkin --- maker of fine toys, tools, tables

It is not an obsession. I just like using the correct equations. So what do you think? Were all scientists before 1887 obsessed with the Galilean transformation equations?

No, I just use the Galilean transformation equations to explain what scientists know today. We know that Hafele and Keating transported cesium clocks on airplanes and reported the results they obtained. If the cesium clocks were flown around the earth in the direction of rotation, they were slower than a cesium clock kept on the ground. If the cesium clocks were flown around the earth opposite to the direction of rotation, they were faster than a cesium clock kept on the ground. The Galilean transformation equations can explain any difference in rates of time by simply keeping them separate.
x'=x-vt
t'=t
t is the time of the cesium clock on the ground. t'=t means that if a clock on the airplane has a different rate, then the time of that clock has to be converted to the time of the clock on the ground before using it in this set of Galilean transformation equations.
x = x' - v'n'
n = n'
This set of Galilean transformation equations shows events as they are seen from the airplane. The clock on the airplane is faster or slower than the clock on the ground. n' is the time of the clock on the airplane. x and x' are the same coordinates in S and S' as they were in the first set of equations. v' is the velocity of the airplane as calculated with the time of the clock on the airplane. If the clock on the airplane is slower than the clock on the ground, v' is a faster velocity than v. If the clock on the airplane is faster than a clock on the ground, v' is a slower velocity than v.
None of this is difficult to understand except to scientists.
Now let's discuss Maxwell's equations. Maxwell used partial derivatives to describe electromagnetic waves. Without going into any particular equations, what we have to take into account with regard to Maxwell's equations is that he died eight years before the Michelson-Morley experiment took place. He was using the Galilean transformation equations and Isaac Newton's absolute time interpretation because that was all any scientists of that time were using. They did not know about clocks slowing down and speeding up. The difference between scientists like Galileo, Newton, and Maxwell and scientists of today is that they all appeared capable of doing junior high algebra. If some uneducated high school graduate mentioned the Galilean transformation equations they did not immediately go into hysterics the way scientists do today. They used the Galilean transformation equations every day. You have to respect people who do not get hysterical the way scientists of today do.
