"The Starmaker" wrote in message news:598C989F.148A@ix.netcom.com... https://monthlyreview.org/2009/05/01/why-socialism/ *** This piece of trash was written not by Einstein, but by a socialist political hack, of the same type than those who penned Obama's two books. Einstein was a scientist and scientists just don't write or orate in the lingo of the socialist ruling class. Obama, on the other hand, is the epitome of socialism/communism and has the flowery rhetoric of those carpet baggers. Einstein fled to Switzerland to escape the encroaching threat od Hitler's "National Socialism" (NAZI) party and from there to the US where he stayed for the rest of his life. You, Starmaker, are a clueless hack.

China has done better, but they have allowed some private enterprise to leaven impact. Things weren't very nice at the beginning, though. I suppose the big difference is actually between free will and forced implementation.

No, ownership of the means of production by government is not socialism. (This is what Lenin said, but Lenin said many amusing things.) See e.g. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Socialism -- Jan

Totally nonsense, both of you. Exactly the opposite, that the government, unlike capitalist regimes, doesn't own anything. But the people is the Owner and the Beneficiary. In capitalism the regime owns the significant infrastructure, as the military, police, heavy industry etc. You two kids, wikipedia freaks, has so much to learn. For instance the first man on the Moon, never gave a seminar to talk with people about the alleged achievement. Inexplicable.

Sorry to disappoint but I lived under communism and been to many countries with varying degrees of socialism. I can assure you that communism and socialism are two very different things. Like, say, night and day. Yes, I know that Soviet satellites and the USSR itself kept calling themselves "socialist" but it's just a misnomer (like so many things originating from the USSR). -- Jan

Let me try, those Socialist countries are rather National oriented, meanwhile the Communist are inherently international. But there are no Communist Republics, but only Socialist and Popular. It seems to be an American peculiarity to confuse them. -- Jan

Yes, it is. Even in your link, it is one form of socialism: "Public ownership." > (This is what Lenin said, but Lenin said many amusing things.) Hey, this what Bellamy said, and his book sparked a huge movement: "In the United States alone, over 162 "Bellamy Clubs" sprang up to discuss and propagate the book's ideas.[3] Owing to its commitment to the nationalization of private property and the desire to avoid use of the term socialism, this political movement came to be known as Nationalism — not to be confused with the political concept of nationalism.[4] The novel also inspired several utopian communities." > See e.g. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Socialism > > -- > Jan "Socialism is a range of economic and social systems characterised by social ownership and democratic control of the means of production, as well as the political theories, and movements associated with them." Sounds like "government" ownership to me. "Social ownership may refer to forms of public, collective, or cooperative ownership, or to citizen ownership of equity. Cooperatives have been widespread in mid-American farm country. The old co-op grocery store in the town where I grew up certainly was NOT socialism, so I think the wiki article is a bit disingenuous. > There are many varieties of socialism and there is no single definition > encapsulating all of them.[13] Social ownership is the common element > shared by its various forms. Yeah, and one variety was called "nationalism" :-) It would seem that the word "socialism" has lost its meaning over the years since it now means almost anything.
