No, it doesn't. All it means is that at least one of the clocks is wrong, and use of that clock results in a wrong speed. Gary ----------------------------------------------------------- You say that scientists don't use velocity, but this is refuted by checking most any physics textbook. You said the Hafele and Keatings experiment proves the GT and not the LT when, in fact, they used GR to analyze their results because their experiment was performed in a varying gravitational field (which is outside of the LT's domain). Claiming that their experiment supports the GT is pure balderdash. It's obvious that you do NOT understand ANY transform, yet you continue to spout foolishness about them. No, I do not ignore what you say. We both know that it does not answer the question I asked.
Here are the Galilean transformation equations.
x'=x-vt
y'=y
z'=z
t'=t
t is the time of a clock on the ground. v is the speed of the plane as calculated from the time of the clock on the ground.
x'=x-(v2)(t2)'
y'=y
z'=z
(t2)' = (t2)
(t2)' is the time of the clock on the airplane. (v2) is the speed of the airplane as calculated from the time of the clock on the airplane.
I understand the Galilean transformation equations. If you think I do not, go ahead and prove that the above equations are wrong.

If you think I do not, go ahead and prove that the above equations are wrong. i think you understand the galilean transforms very well, else you would not have been able to come up with this ingenious idea of using them twice. however that doesn't necessarily mean when taken together the equations will give the result you desire, though whether i can prove this to your satisfaction is another matter. well, can but try, so, start with the business of a photon in S moving with the trajectory x = c t and insert this value into the first GT so one gets x' = c t - v t or, since t = t' x' = (c - v)t' but if einstein is correct this should read x' = c t' so as you have discovered one GT doesn't work, and the question then is do two GT's fare any better? well, i don't think they do. consider first the two expressions for x' x' = x - v t x' = x - (v2)(t2)' which if taken together must imply v t = (v2) (t2)' or, since t = t' t' = (v2) (t2)'/v now substitute this result into the previous result x' = (c - v)t' and find x' = (c - v)(v2)(t2)'/v and, yes, this will give the desired result of x' = c (t2)' but only if and only if c = (c - v) (v2)/v or: (v2) = c v /(c -v) ok. so far so good. using two GT's you have reproduced einsteins result that the speed of the photon in either frame is c, provided its trajectory is x = c t and (v2) = c v /(c -v) but. big but, what happens if the photon is going in the opposite direction? x = - c t so, going through the whole process again: x' = - c t - v t x' = -(c + v)t' x' = - (c + v)(v2)(t2)'/v this will now only give the desired result of x' = - c (t2)' if and only if - c = - (c + v) (v2)/v or: (v2) = c v /(c + v) but this is not the same requirement as before. (v2) cannot be equal to both c v/(c + v) and c v/(c - v) at the same time. something is wrong somewhere. the equations aren't right. (. . . probably)

This is something I have never seen before, someone actually asking an intelligent question. And you have moved on to a question about something other than Einstein's original idea of a photon proceeding in the direction of motion. Here is what you have to do. If a photon is proceeding in the
-x direction, it has a velocity of -c, not c. The Lorentz equations solve this problem by always squaring c, so that the velocity of c cannot change the equation. But when talking about light, the Lorentz equations preserve the velocity of light in the equation
t'= (t-vx/c^2)/sqrt(1-v^2/c^2)
If a photon is going in a negative direction, then x in the equation is
x = -ct, not x=ct, and, similarly, x' in the equation
x' = (x-vt)/sqrt(1-v^2/c^2)
would also be x' = -ct' instead of x'=ct'.
If you go back to the earliest discussions of transmission of light, scientists almost always talked about velocity of light and used the symbol w for velocity of light. After Einstein and Lorentz, velocity of light was no longer important because all that was needed in the Lorentz equations was speed of light.

As I said before, if you stand in a barbershop and ask questions about neurosurgery, it shouldn't be a surprise that neurosurgeons aren't in the barbershop to answer your questions. Who would be at fault for neurosurgeons not being around to answer your questions in the barbershop? You, or the neurosurgeons? I guess you're saying the neurosurgeons would be useless if they didn't hang around in barbershops to answer your questions. Now, if you wanted to pick up a book that has all those simple questions about slower clocks and relative speed between frames, then you would have your answers like 1,2,3. But no, you have decided that you'd rather ask those questions elsewhere. And who takes the blame for that? -- Odd Bodkin --- maker of fine toys, tools, tables

I interpret the Michelson-Morley experiment to mean that light is traveling at c in S according to a clock in S and at c in S' according to a clock in S'. The correct way to show this is with two sets of Galilean transformation equations.
x'=x-vt
y'=y
z'=z
t'=t
t is time on a clock in S.
x'=x-(v2)(t2)'
y'=y
z'=z
(t2)' = (t2)
(t2)' is time on a clock in S'. (v2) is the speed between frames of reference according to the time of a clock in S'.
With regard to the Hafele-Keating experiment, whether the moving clock is slower or faster than a clock in S, it can be used in the above equations.

The amount of time is the same in either set of Galilean transformation equations. So let us say that the amount of time is one day, which we can measure by one rotation of the earth. Now for these events, we have 9.9 X 10^14 transitions of a cesium atom in a cesium clock in S. So t in the first set of equations would be 24 hours counted by this rate of transitions of a cesium atom. In other words, this rate of transitions would agree with the rotation of the earth as a day because the clock would be sitting on the surface of the earth. Then we have a clock in an airplane which flies in the direction of rotation of the earth, and a cesium atom in that clock only transitions 9.8 X 10^14 times. So the time of that clcok is represented by (t2)' in the second set of Galilean transformation equations. Since that clock is slower than the clock in the first set of equations, (v2) is a faster speed than v in the first set of equations. > > (t2)' is time on a clock in S'. The frames of reference are the same, the events are the same. What is different are the time coordinates. S(x,y,z,t) and S'(x',y',z',t') in the first set of equations. S(x,y,z,(t2)) and S'(x',y',z',(t2)') in the second set of equations. > > > With regard to the Hafele-Keating experiment, > > whether the moving clock is slower or faster than > > a clock in S, it can be used in the above equa- > > tions. > > Couldn't guess what you mean. Yes, the time differences are given by the equations I have given. If a plane is traveling in the direction of rotation, (v2) will be a faster speed than v; if the plane is traveling opposite to the direction of rotation, (v2) will be a slower speed than v. > Why did you skip my other question: > > How do you define the motionless frame of refer- > ence, which must exist according to your equa- > tions, and why no experiment is thought to have > found it? > The motionless frame of reference is S(x,y,z,t) in the first set of equations and S(x,y,z,(t2)) in the second set of equations.

Since that clock is slower than the clock in the first set of equations, (v2) is a faster speed than v in the first set of equations. but what exactly is the relationship between the time t in S and the time (t2)' in S'? how could you use your equations to calculate (t2)' given a value for t? (or vice-versa). the lorentz equations provide a way to do this, but without at a least one extra equation involving t and (t2)' and the relative velocity, how could you do this using the galilean equations? > > > > (t2)' is time on a clock in S'. What is different are the time coordinates. S(x,y,z,t) and S'(x',y',z',t') in the first set of equations. I just did the same thing Einstein did with the Lorentz equations when he substituted them for the Galilean transformation equations. He could have done the same thing with the Galilean transformation equations without the length contraction.

It depends on the conditions of motion and gravitation, but in the sense of Special Relativity, which Einstein defined to be relativity in the absence of gravitation, we work the problem the same way he said he did, just using two sets of Galilean transformation equations.
x'=x-vt
y'=y
z'=z
t'=t
t is the time of a clock in S.
x'=x - (v2)(t2)'
y'=y
z'=z
(t2)' = (t2)
(t2)' is the time of a clock in S'. (v2) is the speed of S relative to S' according to the time of the clock in S'.
According to the Michelson-Morley experiment, light travels at a speed of c=300,000 km/sec in S according to the time of a clock in S, or x=ct. Light travels in S' at a speed of c according to the time of a clock in S', or x'=c(t2)'.
x'=x-vt
c(t2)'=ct-vt
(t2)'=(t-vt/c)
This equation describes the time coordinates for a photon in each set of Galilean transformation equations for a photon traveling in the direction of motion of S'. To show that the speed of light is c in both sets of equations, we derive the velocity transforms for dx'/d(t2)'.
u=dx/dt
u'=dx'/d(t2)'
x'=x-vt
dx' = dx - v dt
t' = t-vt/c = t-vx/c^2 if x=ct
dt' = dt - v dx/c^2
u' = dx'/d(t2)'
u' = (dx - v dt)/(dt - v dx/c^2)
u' = dt(dx/dt -v)/dt(1 - v dx/dt /c^2)
u' = (dx/dt -v)/(1 - v dx/dt /c^2)
u' = (u-v)/(1-uv/c^2)
If we are talking about a photon, then dx/dt=c.
u'= (c-v)/(1-cv/c^2)
u'= (c-v)/(1-v/c)
u' = (c-v)/(c/c-v/c)
u' = c(c-v)/(c-v)
u' = dx'/d(t2)' = c
The speed of the photon is c in both frames of reference.
