Why would you make a bubble chamber out of 2 inch thick steel? Being (usually) of liquid hydrogen, you'd need to insulate the hell out of it, but steel is a poor insulator. They operate at a few atmospheres pressure. They have a portal for the incoming particles which would need to be sufficient to separate the bubble chamber contents from the vacuum beamline yet let most of the incoming particles through. Perhaps beryllium, a metal yet with a very low atomic weight. Or the portal can be combined with the target which some beam smashes into, generating the stuff to be observed in the bubble chamber, and the target also separates "inside" from "outside".
