The fact that the aether was 'superfluous' does not mean it was not fundamental to the theory. It is. Its existence enabled Einstein to word his P2 exactly along the lines of Lorentz's conclusions. The aether made light speed source independent and the LTs made it observer independent. Obvious, eh? Einstein plagiarized the idea, stated those findings as a postulate and derived the maths that were consistent with the postulate. He had no reason to mention the aether because it was well and truly included in the postulate. How else could light emitted by differently moving sources possibly find a common speed? In the midst of all the subsequent controversy and discussion, Einstein hopped in with his disguised version of the same thing...and with a few faked experiments by other SciFi addicts, became famous. As I have pointed out before, he would have made an excellent used car salesman....
