Seems he was mistaken. It would be easy to suppose that the 
singularities in the math don't represent a physical reality. In such 
situations, one supposes that the theory would need to be adjusted so as 
to properly represent the extreme cases. The theory appears to be more 
accurate than Einstein presumed, with evidence for the existence of 
black holes being compelling.
