Actually I have not conducted this experiment, but tried to interpret 
the results.

There was an effect, but Mr. Roberts claimed, this was caused by 
gravitational deformation of the device.

My reply was, this could be tested by building the apparatus from 
materials with different weight and different strength.

If the effect is different for different materials, than the statement 
is most likely true, that the effect is caused by deformation.

But if the weight has no or very little influence, than the effect is 
not caused by gravity and/or stress.
