Graham— spends his life in math, yet so stupid— thinks a ellipse is a conic section— too bozo to realize it is a cylinder section. Exit math when you are this stupid

However, regarding an ellipse as a conic section is more interesting than regarding it as a cylindrical section. Much of the maths you get out of conic sections applies also to hyperbolae and parabolas. -- Alan Mackenzie (Nuremberg, Germany).

Hello again, AP. Archimedes Plutonium <plutonium.archimedes@gmail.com> wrote: > Alan you have no logical brains :-) Hmm. So, you don't quote anything I wrote, then come up with ad-hominem. Surely you can do better than that? > A cow is a horse is a canary > Get out of math— it is over your head Actually, I'm a graduate mathematician, though I'll admit it was a long time ago. But we studied conic sections while still at school (to be precise, in British English, this means the institutions one attends between ages 5 and 18). Conic sections are fascinating; For example, the focus of the section is a point of contact between the plane and a sphere tangent to that plane and the cone. The directrix is the intersection between the sectioning plane and the plane through the circle where the sphere touches the cone. Have you ever studied conic sections? -- Alan Mackenzie (Nuremberg, Germany).

You should talk, Illogical One.
If you really think an ellipse isn't a conic section, why can't you
either provide an actual proof, or disprove the following:
Some preliminaries:
Top view of the conic section and depiction of the coordinate system used
in the proof:
^ x
|
-+- <= x=h
.' | `.
. | .
| | |
' | '
`. | .'
y <----------+ <= x=0
Cone (side view):
.
/|\
/ | \
/b | \
/---+---' <= x = h
/ |' \
/ ' | \
/ ' | \
x = 0 => '-------+-------\
/ a | \
Proof:
r(x) = a - ((a-b)/h)x and d(x) = a - ((a+b)/h)x, hence
y(x)^2 = r(x)^2 - d(x)^2 = ab - ab(2x/h - 1)^2 = ab(1 - 4(x - h/2)^2/h^2.
Hence (1/ab)y(x)^2 + (4/h^2)(x - h/2)^2 = 1 ...equation of an ellipse

You are the one who seems to think a cow is a canary.
(Yes, that's _probably_ satire, but given some of the bizarre things you
believe, I can never be certain...)
