A usual example of potential vs actual
infinite has potential as the same thing
as unbounded.

 https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Actual_infinity

"Proponents of [rejecting actual infinity],
from Kronecker onwards, reject the claim
that there are actually infinite mathematical
objects or sets." These are here "finitists"
or "ultra-finitists" or "retro-finitists".

The Wiki then closes with a bunch of quotes
extolling trans-finite cardinals as "the"
actual infinity, but these infinitary combinatorics
are working pretty much with a usual simply-non-
finite infinity, often written oo, \infty, or '∞'.

We all know delta-epsilonics and fundamental
theorems for real analysis basically via
delta-epsilonics besides that modern mathematics'
abstract algebra's measure theory hands over a
complete ordered field with measure 1.0 and
countable additivity.

You can leave retro-finitist crankety trolls
out of this discussion about infinity.

(Of course, "actual infinity" is also in
a sense "unbounded", but also with the
property of being "completed" and as above,
"infinitary" instead of "finitary, unbounded".)

You need a complete bjection. If there are only the first n pairs while infinitely many are not yet existing, nothing can be said about equinumerosity.

That is a simple quantifier confusion taken from every finite set and extended into the infinite.

An infinite amount is actual infinity, by the way. In potential infinity, there is no amount. But what matters is that the total amount of nodes is countable.

Cantor's list argument for instance is only strict for finite lists. Infinite lists behave like Hilbert's Hotel. Every new guest is absorbed. Infinitely many new guests are absorbed.

If in the infinite countable and uncountable have no observable consequences, then you can drop set theory.

It cannot shift from < to > however.

Why so?

The potentially infinite correlation { (1,2}, (2,4), (3, 6), ...}
between the potentially infinite set of naturals and the potentially
infinite set of even numbers is sufficient to show (by reasoning from
the definition, rather than the informal version here) that the
collections are in 1-1 correspondence.

It threatens to continue in infinity but does not really require it.

up to every pair (n, 2n). But what about the rational numbers or even the algebraics?
>

Even continuing will never show equinumerosity. Imagine two zipper strings of different length which fit to every length.

But we have a finite definition of the alignment, so we can prove
proerties, eg that no even number is omitted from the range,
by induction.

So, it is not the case that a complete bijection is *needed*.

Good question.

Maybe there are no such zipper strings?

If it's the word "equinumerosity" you have trouble with, pick
a different one.

We can prove properties, e.g., that with every taking of a second partner 2n the number of not paired first partners n grows. We can prove by induction that the number of not paired first partners (n+1, ..., 2n) grows over all bounds. In mathematics we find the limit oo for this number.

It is. Otherwise the mathematical limit applies. We cannot name any first partner that remains outside? No problem. There remain always infinitely many beyond any named one.

It is the same principle as with (n, 2n).

n and 2n are a simple example. |Q and |N are a striking example.

The correct word would be: "Up to every n, we can find a partner in |Q." But that says nothing about finishing, since every n is followed by infinitely many (and every q is followed by an infinity of infinities).

So what??

All that matters for this sort of alignment is that for each entry found
in the first collection, there is exactly one that corresponds in the
second collection, and vice versa.

two examples =/= universal property.

Right, that says nothing about finishing.
"[It] threatens to continue in infinity but not really requires it." (WM)

All that matters for this sort of potentially infinite alignment is that
for each entry found in the first collection, there is exactly one that
corresponds in the second collection, and vice versa. And sometimes this
proof is available from the definition.

It threatens to continue in infinity but not really requires it.

No. That does not show anything since you are always working in a tiny finite initial segment. Set theory must, counterfactually, claim that this is all elements.

And therefore it does not enable a diagonal argument yielding a real number.

You have already forgotten that set theory is not at issue?
No doubt it is hard to keep up.

I am suggestiong tht there is a perfectly good way to consider
correlations between potentially infinite collectionx staying inside the
workd of the potentially infinite.

The output may or may not be rational; however, you can work out that
the anti-diagonal is not in the original listing, just as you can
show that sqrt(2) is irrational.

It only threatens to continue in infinity but not really requires it.

Of course. Every infinite set is in bijection with every infinite set. But we have to restrict the term "bijection" to potential infinity, i.e., never having a complete set.

One way to show that is the intercession, see. p. 242 of https://www.hs-augsburg.de/~mueckenh/Transfinity/Transfinity/pdf

So for this purpose your remarks about size of uncovered numbers tending
to infinity were, as I said, completely irrelevant.

Here you make a substantive claim about every possible pairs of
(potentially) infinite collections.

They are only relevant when completeness, i.e., actual infinity is assumed.

In potential infinity there is no completeness. Up to every n we can find a q and vice versa. But this bijection does not allow claims about equinumerosity.

As I said, irrelevant for the claim I made.

Your usual ambiguity.

Do you mean:

   1) for each particular n, we can examine the situation?
   2) we can prove from the definition of the potentially
infinite correlation relation the universal claim
that this is a 1-1 relation?

> But this bijection does not allow claims
> about equinumerosity.

It does allow claim of 1-1 correlation, under version 2 above.
And there are at least some cases where version 2 holds --
after all you accept proof by induction for potentially
infinite collections.

For every FISON (1, 2, 3, ..., n) we can find a segment of rational numbers (q_1, q_2, q_3, ..., q_n) and vice versa. Infinitely many naturals and infinitely many rationals are always missing.

you want to maintain the ambiguity??

Consider using 2) above rather than 1).

Here you, prudently no doubt, neglect to mention what potentially
infinite correlation you are thinking about.

It works like this:
give a finite definition of a potentially infinite collection

   { (1,r1), (2,r2), (3,r3), ... } with r1,r2,... rationals.

When you have done that, it may be that you can in fact show
that each (not all) rational appears, in the same way that you are
able to show that sqrt(2) is irrational. It may also be that you
have chosen a correlation without that property.

It threatens to continue in infinity but does not really require it.

Potential infinity is never completed. Therefore (2) above cannot be applied.
Simple example: Every natural number has a unique prime decomposition. That will be true for every natural number once created. But it cannot be used to prove that all natural numbers exist. Same with the identity bijection. It holds up to every n. But every n is followed by infinitely many others.

But I can show that the amount of unpaired rationals between 0 and n increases without end with n. That disproves the hope that all could be in the bijection. Well, you said each.. It will be hard to shwo that because for every n there remain almost all rationals unpaired, even those of the most frequented interval between 0 and 1.

In FOL+ZFC there is no notion of potential infinite.
What do you mean by potential infinite.

And unbounded set. Cantors theorem holds independent
of the set that has a cardinality, is unbounded or not.

Cardinality is a notion that is more or less agnostic
to unboundedness. For example this sets here:

   omega : Unbounded

   omega+5 : Bounded

All have the same cardinality. What are you bragging
about Prof Muckefunk. Doesn't make much sense so far..

A pot. inf. list is always finite. Construct the antidiagonal and append it. It is in the list. Now there is a new list. Construct the antidiagonal and append it. It is in the list. This process will never end. It is infinite. Only the assumption of a completed list can prevent that.
