I'm writing an article about the benefits of reasoning visually, using 
imagery. I wanted to cite a quote by a well known physicist about how some 
physicists reason visually, i.e., in pictures and others reason 
analytically, i.e., via equations.

But I can't quite remember who said it or the exact quote. I have a vague 
recollection that Dirac was either the person who made the quote or it was 
said about him, but I'm not sure about that either.

  Anyone remember the quote?

It's reminiscent of a well-known anecdote about John von Neumann. 
He was asked, if two trains start at (some given distance) apart 
and approach each other at (some given speed), and an insect flies 
(at some given greater speed) back and forth between them until 
it is crushed in the head-on collision, how far does it fly?

The purpose was to distinguish between a fairly slow analytical 
solution, by summing the infinite series, and a quicker visual 
solution by ignoring the reversals and dividing the insect's 
speed by the time to the collision.  Although von Neumann was 
known to be analytical, he answered almost immediately; and 
when queried as to why he had taken the visual approach, he 
replied in surprise, "No, I did sum the infinite series!"
