Optimum sharpness is obtained about when the diffraction pattern of the aperture matches the spot size from classical geometric ray tracing at the plane of the screen. The other more exotic form of pinhole enlargement leads to coded aperture masks which is an altogether more interesting subject. Bigger pinhole is brighter so you have to trade one against the other.
