With satellite images of the earth's surface, different wavebands tend to be correlated, particularly if they are reflected sunlight. However, if the images are from different dates then not only does the correlation tend to be less, but there will be geometric distortions between the images. This geometric distortion can be removed by registration/resampling, but that leaves your question of how do we know it exists? The answer is the prior knowledge that it always exists. I am aware that I have not answered your question. Perhaps you need a better question. That is to say, a more specific answer would require a more specific problem. Images of what? What modalities?
