#461080 — commencement

Yesterday we enjoyed but mostly endured The Brat's commencement, MBA
from UC Berkeley. I work for her now. The commencement speech was,
what we could make out of it, perfectly dreadful. The acoustics in the
Greek Theater are blessedly awful.

https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/53724080/SF/Greek_Grad.JPG

Imagine sitting in the sun in a black robe, listening to drivel for
two hours. Two people passed out. I cut my Tulane graduation, because
it would have been even longer and way, way hotter.

This is better:

If you are ever in Berkeley, no matter how you feel about the
politics, stroll around the campus. It's stunningly beautiful. Have a
beer at the Faculty Club (which is now a public bar and restaurant), a
serene and beautiful place. The seasonal beer was Purple Haze on tap.

Except for the Engineering Building (Cory Hall), which is really dated. Some students prefer UCLA for newer and better buildings.

That, and a couple of other modern buildings, are hideous. Just look
away.

Well, some can't. If you are Engineering student, you pretty much live in that building half of the time. At least one student i knew turns down UCB for UCLA.

Please convey my congratulations to your daughter. Perhaps you'll now
stop referring to her as the "brat" ?:-}

(I cut my ASU MSEE graduation... probably even hotter ;-)

I won't call her The Brat to her face, of course. She might fire me.

We're taking her and A Guy to Ruth's Chris Steak House shortly. The
meat is amazing.

After I got my masters degree there was none of this celebration stuff.
I received a simple post card in the mail, gray, post-consumer recycling
paper, that my degree was ready to be picked up at room 121 at the
so-and-so building. Not even a letter which would have cost 5c more in
postage. Well, that way the mail man knew I had my degree.

Our "commencement" was self-organized. We rented a place called "Motor
Bar", all of it, then had one wild party there. To this day I do not
remember how I got home on my road bike but I did (even crossing a
border that still existed back then).

My best friend in school opted to NOT pick up his diploma, in person.

It arrived in a 6x9" manilla envelope -- neatly CREASED in half! :>

I cut town. I gave my mother and in-laws the excuse that I had to
show up for work before the commencement so we left a few days before.
There was no way I was going. They didn't even call the names of
engineering students (too many), not that it would have mattered.

>My best friend in school opted to NOT pick up his diploma, in person.

No one got their diploma at commencement. They were all mailed a
couple of months later.

>It arrived in a 6x9" manilla envelope -- neatly CREASED in half! :>

Ours were in a better grade of envelope. ;-) I have no idea where it
is, though. I don't think I've seen it in over 25 years.

That was the only way that I could get mine: no attendance, no diploma.

I went to my stepson's at U Penn in 1984. What a joke - solemnity
stayed home and casual reigned. Some White House bloke blathered on
endlessly. I haven't gone to another since and probably won't ever again.

My point was that even those in attendance received their diplomas a
few months later.

They're pointless. I guess if you've forked out a quarter of a
million for a degree in * Studies, the pain of some Whitehouse[*] dude
droning on for an hour is insignificant.

[*] Why did my speel czecher suggest "whorehouse"?

I had a letter from my employer saying I had to be out of town on
business. The boss said that if I typed it, he'd sign it.

Huh? I don't understand this "requirement".

(College,) we could attend the commencement ceremony or pick up
our diplomas at the Registrar's (?) office. If you weren't in
town, you could arrange for them to *mail* the diploma to you.

I don't know anyone who attended the ceremony -- though I'm sure there
are folks who did! It always seemed artificial, to me: do you have
a ceremony every time you complete EVERY task you set out on?
("Yay! I mowed the lawn! Let's all get together and celebrate!!")

My diploma came in a heavy plastic sort of "book cover" -- like a hard-back
book with just one page in it (though the cover was thick plastic instead
of thick cardboard). Folks who opted to have theirs mailed got a sheet of
paper (folded in half) WITHOUT the cheesey plastic cover (I suspect they
diverted the cost of the cover (pennies??) to handle the postage! :>

No idea if I even *have* my high school diploma. I can't recall ever
picking it up *or* having it handed to me (OhMiGosh!)

It was mandatory to attend the ceremony, in those days, at Tulane.
There were 12 guys in my graduating EE class, and it would have looked
silly if, say, three of them had shown up.

Having attended an Engineering college, there'd not have been a
lack of representation in any of the engineering schools! :>

My brother had the same issue, though they told him that the only
excuse for not showing up was a death in the family and it had better
be his. There were 425 in my graduating EE class. No one would be
missed and the extra space at commencement was likely appreciated.

Yes, seems the Americans likes to celibrate, what ever they can :-)

In Denmark, where I live, When I received my diploma, we just went out and got drunk (that's what the Danes exceed at)

Same in Germany. No official celebration but we also know how to drink...

Congratulations, I guess now she can officially play the role of bean
counter. You better show some progress from all those paper
scribblings with no component values ;)
