then the lack of appropriate "object server" falls out of the equation.

PDF XChange Editor can export pdf's to a variety of image formats.

For a free solution PDFill PDF Tools will covert to png, jpg, bmp and
tiff formats.

Foxit PhantomPDF can export as jpg, jpg2000, png, tiff, and bmp.

JPEG is always bad for drawings. Its compression is optimised for
handling shading, in which it can hide its dithering. PNG is good
for line art.

However, I suspect that CutePDF will do a good job of your task.
Have you tried it?

I use that to print to a PDF file. But I want to show the schematic in
Word.

Ahh right. Can you print to Postscript and make it EPS?
I suspect Word will accept those (though the EPS conversion
needs to keep the vectors, not rasterize it).

JPEGs are for photos, images with blended colors. Sharp contrasts like
lines on a drawing are terrible in JPGs. Use PNC which supports many
actual formats and will render line drawings nicely in GIF like modes or
photo type images in JPG like modes without you needing to worry about it.

Get an app that lets you print to PNC.

Sorry, that would be PNG. If you want to use what's already on your PC,
get a good image on your PC screen and take a screen capture. Open MS
Paint and paste. Save as type PNG. Bob's your uncle.

If your schematic is poor on the screen I guess you are printing off a
full page and the resolution of your screen is not adequate. Then you
need a printing utility. As someone else pointed out saving as SVG
format is an option that will work for vector drawings while PNG works
for every type of image I've ever wanted to save.

near the start of this thread he said he didn't want pixels.
PNG is less than ideal if the final target is paper

you're better off with a vector format like SVG, or EPS

It should be possible to extract an EPS from a PDF using inkscape

I believe he said he couldn't get a good image by doing a screen capture
and using JPG. I don't think he understands what happens with JPG
images. JPG is not designed to deal with fonts, lines or other sharp
contrasts.

In Orcad Capture you can Highlite all of the schematic. Then in word
Create a new Object and Paste. work well, have you tried that? Good
old DDE.

That doesn't seem to do anything.

So far, the best way is to print on the Sharp digital copier to B-size
paper, then feed it back in and scan as a TIFF.

Hah! In Altium, tried ctrl-A to highlight everything,
ctrl-C to copy to clipboard. In Word, ctrl-V to paste,
whammo, there's my entire schematic. And its scalable.

But I couldn't crop or select portions of the schematic.
Hmm, for that I could copy the schematic to a new sheet,
and edit as desired. Then copy to a smaller sheet size.

OK, saved and tried printing a pdf. Awwkk!! Even tho
the schematic looked great on the Word screen, the pdf
was filled with useless poor-resolution raster stuff.
The schematic parts, wires and font-text were fine, but
the component designators and values were trashed.

Paste special, Picture(Enhanced metafile) didn't help.

1:1 works well, scaling is a differnt issue.
In Word you can change the Picture properties for dpi and compression.
I think Compression off by default tho.

In FrameMaker, you adjust zoom and drag the embedded object
to pan to the section of interest. Then, lay callouts, etc.
onto the "frame".

You can, for example, embed a photo of an object *in* a frame,
scaled however you'd like. Then, create another frame within
this frame overlapping the photo and embed the same file at a
different magnification/zoom level -- to illustrate a
"close up" of some portion of the image that appears "beneath"
(behind) it. Then, days/minutes later, change the sizes/scales
of each of these frames to reflect changing ideas as to the
visual impact of the result.

Instead of having to flit back-and-forth between applications.

Is that a screen capture? That's what I'm doing now, and it doesn't

A screen capture should look *exactly* like the image you have on the
screen. If not, it is because of what you are doing with it after the
capture. JPG is not a good format for images containing text or lines.
You can use an appropriate format such as PNG or BMP and you will end up
with what you have captured with no loss of quality.

> look very good.

Screen capture has already digitized (rasterized) the image.
I.e., you'll never get any *better* quality (nor "precision")
than what you see. Scaling up from there will either result
in "The Jaggies" (TM Reg) *or* a disappointing attempt at an
antialiased image.

There can be somewhat acceptable results if you scale *down*
(depending on what you are looking at).

Note that PDF's (re)sample their imported content so you
can get a variety of interactions.

And, PDF's are only *container* formats; you can embed a
TIFF, BMP, EPS, etc. "image" in a PDF and the user is none
the wiser (indeed, you can even embed one "behind" the other
as is commonly the case with OCR'd text "hiding" behind a TIFF
image of a text page)

You also have to be wary of how your document will eventually
be *used*. E.g., rendering it to paper vs. viewing electronically.
In the former case, the scaling that will be applied to the content
AFTER you've released the document is pretty well constrained;
A-size pages printed on A size paper (i.e., not scaled to fit
E-size paper!)

But, when distributed in electronic form (and viewed electronically),
there is a greater chance that the content will be viewed at a
higher level of magnification. So, letting the images be sampled
at ~100dpi may turn out to produce crappy/jaggy images for those
users who opt to view it "larger than 1:1".

[The solution, of course, is to store the image at a higher resolution
so the viewing software can nicely enlarge it without introducing
visual artifacts. Of course, this increases the size of the document
(which can be a problem if you have hundreds of images!]

Spend an afternoon playing with various settings in your PDF writer,
illustrator, etc. and examine the resulting "documents" at different
levels of zoom, different viewing software, etc. so you understand
the consequences of your document preparation strategy.

of vector formats. :^)

Unfortunately, none of them are traditional vector graphics that Word will
like, so a third conversion tool is still needed.
