Of course kids of a certain age are always looking to make a bigger bang, so I then had a bash at making nitroglycerine. Fortunately for me and the neighbourhood, the attempt failed as I was unaware at that time of the importance of introducing sulphuric acid into the process to mop up excess water in the nitric. Best fun really, though, was just to throw a handful of aluminium chips into a beer bottle containing a few oz of hydrochloric acid, stoppering it and tossing it onto a bonfire. Happy days! :-D

Back when I was a student at MIT, a couple of guys in Baker House
(dormitory) mixed up some of the real stuff, then panicked, and called
the fire department.
It was up at the fifth floor :-(
IIRC they emptied the building then sent someone in with the right
skills to neuter it, then brought it down outside the building via
ladder.

Yes. You add a suitable inert powder filler to the concoction by allowing it to absorb the NG very slowly at its own speed until there's no more liquid left. It can then be handled safely. In fact if you use this fine sand called Kieselghur <sp?> for the purpose you end up making Dynamite, which *is* stable enough to handle clumsily. ;-)

It's the fossil skeletons of diatoms, not actual sand. Cheers Phil Hobbs

I was wracking what's left of my brain from my teenage years and recalled Kieselguhr being in plentiful natural supply on the beaches of Holland. That's what led me to believe it was some sort of sand. Fuller's Earth, then. As an aside, I recall there was a massive customs scam on the border between N. Ireland and the Republic of Ireland some time back in the 1980s. Some enterprising fellow had discovered that passing red diesel (for heating and agricultural purposes only) through a bed of Fuller's Earth removed the red die from it, enabling it to be sold on as road fuel at a massive profit. I think at one point the scammers were making 10,000 pounds a day from the difference in customs rates between red and white diesel in northern and southern Ireland.

Rocket engines. Iodine was more fun, though.

The dems are going to give Gorsuch the 60 votes because when Ginsburg kicks the bucket they are going to claim that her replacement needs 60 votes and then they are going to go all ballistic about the nominee and block it. They know that if they all say no to Gorsuch now that the republicans will just say they need 51 votes to confirm and then Ginsburg replacement is put in with 51 votes with no contest. The whole democrat strategy is posturing for Ginsburg replacement. They hate Gorsuch, but act like he is a good guy to try to force the 60 vote threshold...... Ain't gonna work though because Reid set the standard to 51 votes.
