https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Encephalitis

Encephalitis is a sudden onset inflammation of the brain. It can be caused by bacterial or viral infection. The chickenpox virus isn't listed as one of the common causes, but shingles encephalitis is known and shows up in the statistics.

http://www.nytimes.com/health/guides/disease/encephalitis/print.html

Krw needs that kind of parsing more often than most.

She had chicken pox as a child, then VZV ecephalitis as an adult. So
yes, because she had chickenpox she had ecephalitis. With the two events
separated by many decades.

Sure, I meant that is would be called "shingles" rather than "chicken
pox" since it was not a new infection. It is all the same virus of
course.

Isn't the "flu jab" an assault on your immune system?

My insurance plan covers (and provided) both shingles and pneumonia
vaccines. As an emergency responder, I've had the hepB series and
meningitis.

I think they're a good idea, particularly shingles, pneumonia,
meningitis. I also get flu shots every year.

If you're not sure, google "herd immunity."

You can either trust others to do the right thing, or protect yourself.

Your decision.

I think shingles and pneumonia are only covered for "older" people.

I've not read the recommendation to see why HepB and Meningitis.
Or, if even applicable to my population.

Ditto. But, I usually take the RECOMMENDATIONS to heart.
I.e., I don't just get them for the sake of HAVING them
as everything has a downside (health/side effect/cost)

Mostly that's because there isn't much point in taking it until you are
old. Also, it only lasts for around 5 years. But then it is *less*
effective as you get past 60. I don't see any mention that it can be
given again. So maybe you only get one shot at 50% protection, so
target it at the years when it will do the most good.

*Your* population? Everyone is at risk to meningitis.

Herd immunity doesn't apply to shingles.

Got HepB for travel.

Shingles is nasty even in normal cases. My wife recently had a
patient with ocular shingles - he's hoping to regain vision in that
eye, but so far he's lost visual acuity.
