Then why is it taking up valuable lab space? You should bin it.

It's a drop in the bucket among the things that are taking up valuable
lab space, e.g. HP 8568 spectrum analyzer parts mules, a Tek 466
analogue storage scope that I kid myself that I'll fix one day, .... ;)

There are two Simpson VTVMs on the same shelf as the Avo 16.

Cheers

Er, yes. Well you may remember that I have one of those awaiting a fix-
up. They've recently become unaccountably popular this side of the pond
and as a result I keep losing the ones I see on Ebay to other people who
are continually willing to pay more, it seems. Sigh. I only hope the main
toob is sound on mine. Everything else that may be faulty I can overcome,
but not a main toob!

Simmconn has an affordable LCD upgrade for the 85662 IF/Display unit. Much
better than the tube in any condition plus about 10 pounds lighter.

http://simmconnlabscom.ipage.com/store/page2.html

Makes the 8566/68 into a more modern SA.

Thanks. I have a couple of pretty bright 85662As, and can get another
one for the price of those upgrades if I need it. I'll probably branch
out into 70000-series territory next, because they have tracking
generators. Not till next year, probably.

Tell me about it. I have four Tek 547s, one 545, and one 535, with
about 50 plugins. And a gigantic HP185 sampler with plugins. A big
Fluke differential voltmeter. A bunch of GR RF stuff. More misc stuff.
I can't bear to just tip them into the dumpster and may never get
around to restoring them.

Fortunately we're moving to a new facility with a huge crawl-space
storage area. Or unfortunately.

I don't miss analog scopes or instruments with needles. But my
Keithley electrometer is wonderful.

Analogue meters are very useful for tweaking up stuff. For actual
measurements they're a lot less useful.

Art object? An old TEK tube 'scope, with the blue panel
sides off is a beautiful thing. Even if it doesn't work.

Somebody probably hired an industrial designer. Never hire an
industrial designer.

One of my customers did that and wound up with an ICCD camera that
looked like a cheap rice cooker. They eventually redesigned it to look
more dignified.

It was one of the better Hickok models. It belonged to the TV
station, and the power transformer shorted out while I was rebuilding
the transmitter. I couldn't find another in that town, around 1990.

There's a theorem of Bode's to the effect that if you start with a parallel RC, the matching network has to obey

1/(2 pi RC) >= -integral (0 to inf) ln(1-|Gamma|),

Where Gamma is the insertion gain. (I'm not 100% sure I'm quoting that right--it's in my book someplace.) There are more complicated versions for more complicated sources, iirc due to Darlington and other folks.

In any case, you can get a bunch more bandwidth by relaxing the return loss spec, but you use up your allowance fast if the mismatch isn't fairly uniform.

T-coils separate the R and C, so they obey somewhat different rules and are generally better than LC peaking networks in the time domain.

Fun stuff, and sometimes very useful.

Cheers

What is nowadays considered full-blown voodoo is when you break off a
piece of ferrite, dip into into a drop of liquid nails construction glue
because that's what they had around, stick it next to a trace and
suddenly everything miraculously quiets down.

"What's that pill you glued in there?" ... "Oh, that? Soylent Green".

Oh, I'm doing that already. 2 pF is a heap of capacitance, and every
picosecond counts.

I soldered a flap of copper tape across the top of a power opamp with
a heat pad.. soic-8, it helped some.

It wouldn't take a big heat sink on top to seriously increase the
surface area. On the bottom, one could extend the collector contact
into a pour, around and under the part. No solder mask underneath.
Maybe a dab of epoxy to close the air gap.

To measure that, I guess I'd have to use the pulsed Vbe trick, to get
the actual junction temperature. Grounded-base maybe. Sounds like fun.

Has anyone tried thermally conductive potting to kee Tj down ? We did
some impressive tests for an Atex/IECEx design, like dissipating 6.5W
from TSSOP8. Silicone based compound was also easy to pry off, unlike
epoxy-based one.

What kind of thermally conductive epoxy did you use?
