Who's the bigger idiot? The idiotic law or the idiot who follows it?

If you don't like the law, work to have it changed.

But, selectively following laws because you think them "inappropriate"
lies the way of anarchy.

Should I have to come to a complete stop when I approach a 4-way stop
at 3AM and there are no cars in evidence for a mile or more in ALL
DIRECTIONS?

Ans: Yes.

But say the laws were written so that you can only change them if
they're not followed like clockwork, but every legal body follows them
like clockwork.

That's kinda the goal, you might say.

Or worse... because although there are no cars, there *is* a black
motorcycle, speeding, in a small side-street, in the drizzling rain
at deep twilight, wearing dark clothing and helmet, with totally
inadequate lights, appearing from behind parked cars, giving you
basically zero warning, then trying to blame you because they laid
their bike down when they saw you start to move forward *after*
you stopped.

Yes, it happens.

I don't think anyone is in favor of eliminating traffic laws - IMO
they're not at all enforced stringently in the US anyway (except when
there's money to be made.)

Also they're another regressive tax on the poor. What does someone who
makes 100k a year care about getting a $50 parking ticket or a $100
speeding fine? There are seriously residents of Boston who simply accept
$10,000 worth of parking tickets a year as a "cost of doing business"
cuz it's cheaper than renting a parking space in a tony area of the Back
Bay over the same timeframe.

I'm frankly way more terrified of fascism than anarchy, simply due to
statistical arguments. True anarchy lasting any significant amount of
time is an anomaly of recent human history. Fascism, however, is really
common!

So, the council (who are collecting the fines) and the car owner (who
pays them) have an agreement.

Were the parking really problematic the council would relocate the car to
an impound lot.

Yes, "unspoken agreements" between government and the wealthy to the
effect of "the law doesn't apply to you" are fairly common, if you'd
noticed.

Ignoring inapropriate laws is one way of working to have them changed.

see "civil disobediance" and "Jury nullification"

So, no cops :) Still, you don't want to hit a cyclist or a pedestrian.

A society where some group or other gets the laws written just the way
they like 'em, and then every legal body enforces the letter of the law
with clockwork precision is not a free society, it's called a fascist
state, dude.

Not mention the extreme righties, who keep on rewriting abortion law, and seeing their amendments getting thrown out by the courts. The last case of that I recall would have been in Texas.

Extremists don't write good laws.

They can write good laws to support a single-party White state, which is
what all the rationalizing and dissembling about sticking to the letter
of the law is about.

Once you got one of those you definitely wouldn't want anyone to be able
to change it on a wihm.

The amusing thing is that they think Trump is the guy who's gonna make
it happen, when pretty much any other random WN you could hire off
Stormfront.org would be more qualified.

When I was a baby, I was so cute that Hopalong Cassidy, on a horse,
stopped a Mardi Gras parade to pick me up and kiss me.

No pepper spray and beat-down with a tactical grade flashlight? No
helicopters? No armored rescue vehicles with quad 50s sticking out the
roof?

Sounds like Mr. Boyd was one of those progressive-socialists who do not
support and respect the police who keep us safe.

In those days, kids could buy chemicals (potassium nitrate, iodine,
whatever) and make things that go bang. It was normal.

Full name: "Deluxe Mixed Nuts" (no peanuts). You may get an almond, you
may get a hazelnut, you may get a cashew or a walnut - there's just no
way to tell. Life is just a sack of nuts.

I liked Picric Acid - not as touchy as mercury fulminate but less toxic
and just kablamy enough to kick off the next stage of the party. Also,
I quite enjoyed dipping cotton or paper into nitric acid and rinsing and
dipping again and rinsing and drying it - very therapeutic on an
otherwise boring summer afternoon. More bang, less residue. I
preferred ammonium nitrate for the same reason. Plus, it could be used
to perk up the tomato patch or loosen stumps.

I liked filling up a large balloon with hydrogen and oxygen and letting
it rise into the air until the actuating mechanism (sometimes
electrical, sometimes chemical) actuated. The balloon filling apparatus
could be also be used to feed a water torch.
