The aim of a President should be to maxmize benefits for the people
who he represents, in DTs case the citizens of the USA.

Europe seems to be coming around to the idea that their politicians
should behave similarly.

That's what Trump says that he is doing. What he's actually doing
maximising the benefits for his friends and family and people rich
enough to bribe him.

Bit of Europe are falling for right-wing opportunists like Trump. Hitler
and Mussolini have dead for long enough for some people to have
forgotten that this is a bad idea.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nicolae_Ceau%C8%99escu

was - in theory - left wing - but he did manage to look a lot like Trump
after a few years in power.

What have Americans done to deserve Donald Trump? Voting him in a second
time was a serious error of judgement, and represents a defective
capacity to notice when you are being lied to, but the American
electorate has been lied to a lot over the years (weapons of mass
destruction) and the American education system doesn't seem to train
American children in the critical skills that they need if they are to
be able to detect when they are being lied to.

There are 350 millions of them; if sleepy Don is only considered
marginally suitable for the job, there must be shocking alternatives.

Hey, did you already get your tariff dividend?
Have you plans what to do with the his next bribe present of $ 5K
of your own money?

He seems like a copy of Zaphod Beeblebrox in the Hitchhiker's guide
to the galaxy.

Wicki:
----------------------
He was briefly the President of the Galaxy (a role that involves no
power whatsoever, and merely requires the incumbent to attract attention
so no one wonders who is really in charge, a role for which Zaphod was
perfectly suited). He is the only man to have survived the Total
Perspective Vortex, though it was established (in the books and first
two radio series) that he survived only because he was in an
Electronically Synthesised Universe created especially for him, thus
making him the most important being in that universe and thus uniquely
equipped to survive its version of the Vortex.
...
As a character, Zaphod is hedonistic and irresponsible, self-centered
almost to the point of solipsism, and often extremely insensitive to the
feelings of those around him. In the books and radio series, he is
nevertheless quite charismatic which causes many characters to ignore
his other flaws.

It was interesting to see youtube posts from women visiting the USA
lately. They were astonished to discover that they could walk alone on
the streets without being harassed. And men mostly want to be friendly
and helpful to women here.

A couple of women left a bar late at night and a guy follwed them. He
kept his distance and just wanted to be sure they got to their car OK.

I'm impressed at how many friendly and smart and different people (and
dogs) I meet every day, all sorts of colors and sizes and sexes. The
next generation, the college kids, are awesome.

Douglas Adams did have a lively sense of humour, but he was British, and
Donald Trump clearly isn't.

Not all that many of them. It's a legal obligation to get educated, and
while home schooling is an option, the parents have to do a lot work -
on top of just teaching the kids - to demonstrate that the kids really
are getting educated, if they don't show up at a school.

And schools aren't the only places where lunatic Americans with guns
shoot lots of other people at once. It does make for tear-jerking news
footage, and the American news business must have a commercial interest
in sustaining the wide availability of hand guns to any psychotic who
wants one.

It's possible to do it. A car can kill a couple of people, but it's a
lot easier with a gun. Kitchen knives are similarly limited - we had one
nutter (a pyschotic who'd gone off his meds) running around the Bondi
Junction shopping centre with a kitchen knife who killed a few people
before the police shot him. The two guys with guns on Bondi Beach killed
quite a few more.

Limiting access to guns does save lives, but there are other avoidable
risks. Robert F Kennedy has killed more people (two) than most demented
gun nuts just by lying about the risks of vaccination, but nobody is
stopping him from doing it.

Of course kids dying of measles doesn't make for great new stories.

He's well worth it just to see all the wussy furriners quake in fear

It's more incredulity than fear. Donald Trump's lunatic war on Iran has
made the gasoline I buy more expensive, but the question that actually
gets asked is "how could he have been so stupid?". If you enjoy being
seen as contemptible morons you may be enjoying the experience.

The rest of us are wondering when he's going to get his bottom smacked.

The mid-terms are going to be the first opportunity, but the US
electorate re-elected the twit in 2024 with stronger mandate than he got
in 2016, so they can't be relied on to act sensibly.

Like everywhere they care about themselves and their friends.

In Terry Pratchetts' Disc World SF book series there is a continent
where politicians are jailed immediately after elections as a
preventive measure in order not to loose time. The Prime Minister
runs his government work directly from his cell.

Going up 100km is not enough. You also need to miss the earth
when you fall back. That's by far were most of the energy goes.

Suborbital flight is further from orbit than you might think. Reaching
100km of altitude requires 0.98MJ/kg (100km · 9.81m/s/s), a Δv of
1.4km/s (E/m = ½v²). Mean orbital speed v ≈ √(GM/a). Earth weighs
M = 5.97 × 10²⁴ kg, G = 6.67 m³/kg/s/s, and a in this case is the radius
of the earth (6371km) plus our height of 100 km. This works out to
7.85km/s, a kinetic energy of 30.8MJ/kg.

<https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Orbital_speed#Tangential_velocities_at_altitude>

So, suborbital flights to the von Kármán line, as game-changing as they
would have been had decent guidance systems existed in 01942, are about
18% of the way to orbit in Δv terms, or 3% of the way in energy terms.

In particular, the V-2 was designed for 75%-ethanol 25%-water fuel with
a cryogenic liquid-oxygen oxidizer (“Brennstoff”). Pure ethanol has
30MJ/kg, so it cannot reach orbit. Carrying the oxygen cuts that in
half or more. The V-2 engines needed to be completely redesigned for
more energetic rocket fuels. So trying to orbit a payload with a V-2
wouldn’t be any more effective than trying to climb a ladder to the
moon.

<https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Energy_density#In_chemical_reactions_(oxidation)>

To be fair, by the end of the war, the Germans had built rockets before
the end of the war that ran on various more exciting mixes like
C-Stoff/T-Stoff and S-Stoff (with some reductant).

Article says it was launched from northern Norway, which probably puts it inside the Arctic Circle

To be fair, they probably used NASA and its data to establish time-dependent clearance for the launch as well as the orbit itself, to avoid a collision with all the junk up there. That's something becoming more and more critical by the day.

A sounding rocket is nothing compared to a rocket designed
to reach orbit! Not in the same league at all.

Hello. Condolences on 9/11.

Someone wrote about a place, believing it to be within the Arctic
Circle. So I responded about rockets which definitely are launched
within the Arctic Circle.
