#53570 — Hello, sci.crypt cryptonauts! What happened to this NG?

SubjectHello, sci.crypt cryptonauts! What happened to this NG?
Message-ID<tnuacf$29srl$1@news.mixmin.net>
I noticed that sci.crypt swiftly went 'dead' and for many months when I
have checked I have seen only fake spam. Is this group abandoned? Why
are the trolls spamming it?

Are there any lurkers that even check here any more?

I do, but the group is stale at the moment.

The following link goes to my site and decrypts the ciphertext using the
default key. It works because I encrypted the plaintext using the
default key... ;^) It is client side only javascript.

http://fractallife247.com/test/hmac_cipher/ver_0_0_0_1?ct_hmac_cipher=636daa97539e99f2f767ae978d27b356589f479fa9054c4bb497d04386f9ea7d3e92b3e8600eb91050b70f27b5e2cd4a7c3c1711fd530cd7c622cb8f1aefa6ff31286c9b9a684dba062bcdc7606af3265ce80a32a0930645657e94ea9df50c7dd6daffa86de4c33d97e54e2a55fce5551a19b33abbd6109542ec94cfb7261549c8c6db5c0ba0b291645d94318102bcefcf428cccea

Yep, still lurking.

Curious why crypto-recovery scammers are pounding so hard
on this newsgroup, which I would expect to be the least
receptive to their claims.

I suspect that these hacker groups are actually working for the organs
of the state, as proxies to IIA campaigns. The suspect states would be
mainly USA, Britain, China, India, and Russia. The criminal hackers
themselves would never be in direct contact with a state officer, but
their objectives would filter down through from a state officer.

I also suspect they are occasionally paid or blackmailed to assist in
disruption operations. Their spam appears to be intentional disruption
to annoy anyone using the targeted channels.

Any hacker worth his own salt would know that sci.crypt and really
usenet in general, is not the place to find customers. They would also
know that a stream of spam would be an annoyance. They can't be that
stupid not to know. Or maybe I'm wrong and they are that stupid. Either
proposition doesn't bolster their character.

They are looking for the gullible. There's a reason why Nigerian price
emails requesting help transferring 12B of riches are written with such
broken english grammar and spelling. If someone contacts them, even
with all the 'clues' in poor grammar and spelling, then it is highly
likely that is a properly gullible and profitable mark.

These 'recovery' scammers are similar. If they gain a contact, even
after being so obviously spammy and irritating, then they also likely
have gained an easily fleece-able mark.

They are probably ignorant of cryptocurrency enough to believe that
'sci.crypt' relates to cryptocurrency instead of cryptography.

Yes.

In fact, I was considering posting a challenge for the holidays, but
it's hard to get the difficulty level right.

Perhaps you might a couple of easy ones and a couple with some more
difficulty, then bump the thread after Jan. 1 if there are no takers.

When someone cracks the easy one, that's like a shark scenting blood in
the water around the harder one.

Good idea. I'll try. The trouble is it's not always easy to tell
what's easy and what isn't. I am far from an expert... Watch for a new
thread.

When no one posts, no one has anything to reply to.

> Is this group abandoned?

No

> Why are the trolls spamming it?

Possible reasons:

1) there is no penalty to the scammer to spamming the group
2) there is essentially also no monetary cost in spamming the group
3) if even one 'mark' takes the bait, with almost zero cost, any take
   is nearly pure profit
4) they have to get their crap in front of as many eyes as possible to
   "find that mark"
5) they think there are lots of eyes here watching

> Are there any lurkers that even check here any more?

Yep...

It's been 2 months since that post, and still much spam and little
content, anyone done anything to stop the attack and keep the community
alive?

Well, you can do the 'report abuse' thing on google groups - it's a full
time job, though, and they don't appear to listen anyway.

What usenet needs is for google groups to become read/search only.

The state intelligence services have a unwritten policy of disruption of
all independent communications and media. Likely the usual trolls and
sock puppets either went on vacation, quit, died, or got re-assigned to
some other disruption operation. The black hat hacker groups were
probably given instructions to spam their services to pick up the slack
for unabated disruption.

Seldomly. But yes.

Most of the spam is coming from corporate binary access providers. They
work hand in glove with the intelligence organs to maintain 24/7
surveillance, annoyance and disruption of all independent communication
networks. Where the organs can't maintain total information control they
maintain total disruption and disinformation to keep normal people
repulsed from the target medium. They have used black hat hacker groups
for such purposes as a matter of routine. Once a black hat gets busted
and pinched up with charges, they usually offer a deal of permanent
employment in the intelligence internet activities, or very lengthy
prison terms for those who won't cut the deal. Almost everyone takes the
deal, does a short stint in the clink, then comes out to work as a
semi-freelance informant or troll for the state intelligence organs.

It is not too hard to defeat the spam. You may add a filter to your
newsreader that automatically deletes all messages with "google" in the
"Path" header. Most of the spam will then be deleted before you ever see it.

I suggest to use the filters in your newsreader to block messages using
server paths that don't moderate the spam. Then you will have a much
better reading experience. Using this tactic, I haven't seen a spam
message in this group for a long time.

If a spammer uses a free provider I report it to their abuse department
immediately. This is rare because the spammers know they will be shut
down. If you really want to defeat spam and trolls just filter out all
paths from the corporate binary Usenet providers. You'll delete some
small number of legitimate messages, but it is what it is.

Here are several free Usenet providers:

----------------------------------------------------------------
   Eternal September https://eternal-september.org
   Retro BBS https://rocksolidbbs.com
   Nova BBS https://novabbs.com
   Sunsite http://news.sunsite.dk/ (no https)
   DotSrc https://dotsrc.org/usenet/
   NZ BBS http://news.bbs.nz/ (no https)
   Blue World Hosting https://usenet.blueworldhosting.com/
----------------------------------------------------------------

There are more free providers than in this list. I don't feel like
digging them up right now. If anyone else knows any please post them in
reply.

It is ethically better to send a few bits of cabbage to these free
providers than it is to fatten the coffers of the corporate providers
who only care about the money. Some of the free providers are losing
money by offering the free service. So we see they really care about
Usenet and not just making money.

If you complain about spam and serious disruption from one of their
users, these providers will revoke the offender's credentials. The
complaint address is usually provided in the message headers.

Independent NNTP server operators really should avoid peering with
google news and binary digital piracy providers, and just blacklist
their paths. They are a major force in destroying the culture of Usenet
by allowing and propagating endless spam and harassment. The
independents could teach these corporate pigs that allowing spam and
advertising of illegal hacking services is unacceptable. However, I'm
not holding my breath for that to happen. Until that golden, utopian
event filters will have to make do.
