All historical colonizations have been to places with air, water, and growing things where one could be dropped nude and survive. Survival on the Moon or Mars for more than a few minutes requires state of the art technology and constant resupply. Iceland? Greenland? Northern Newfundland? Hell, for much of Europe surviving after being dropped nude in the Winter is not likely. If the Pilgrims had landed at Plymouth bare assed in the Winter they would probably not have survived long. You might want to amend your statement about all historical colonies.

Sure you can theoretically do all that, all it takes is very large, very sophisticated, very heavy, very expensive, and very expensive to transport equipment along with a very expensive power system to make it all work. specified crew size (which you didn't bother with before when you

The movies was less thick with details but it did a good enough job of
illustrating the various points.
Given a failed Mars base and a couple of potatoes a single colonist
could potentially survive indefinitely.

An idiotic choice. RTG's are, pound by pound, far cheaper to loft to
Luna and they run even during the long Lunar nights.
Solar cells are okay for tiny robots but they can never power cities

Where are the lost litres going? Wherever it is, they can probably be
found and recaptured by something even if only a cool metal wall and a
gutter leading to a tank.
The water can't be escaping from the colony. If it did then the *air*
would go with it and any colony losing that sort of mass of air every
day would rectify the situation with extreme rapidity.
Essentially, any lunar colony would only need more water to account
for an increase in acreage of crops or of human population, or
possibly of swimming pools and scenic lakes.
But this is all moot. Land one semi-large comet onto the lunar
surface and wastage becomes something one can ignore.
It doesn't *matter* if the colony leaks when one has an ocean to
hand.

Now *that* is a possible use for solar panels. Store sufficient juice
to run the air-conditioners for a month in batteries and charge them
when sunlight is available. Essentially maintenance-free systems
running forever.

Jupiter has many, many tons of free nitrates in the form of ammonia
and ram-mining is easy. Ram-mining Titan is possibly easier but I'm
squeamish about fucking around with a world that might support life of
some sort.

Solar radiation in the form of particles like protons, electrons and
other crud would be a problem but humans are adaptable. Sure, some
would die or get ill but others would resist the effects more. Those
would be the progenitors of a new, hardier sub-species.
