On 03 Dec 2021, Molly Bolt <mollythebolt666@gmail.com> posted some news:18884ccb-318c-47fa-9b43-1776b95f1377n@googlegroups.com: > Keep your faggot desires to yourself you stupid fucking liberals. Edgewood Independent School District teacher Michael Gonzales posed for a photo in his classroom. In the background, two large flags hung in parallel: the American colors and the rainbow emblem of inclusivity. What happened next underscores the degree to which the culture wars have permeated public schools nationwide. Gonzales, like other teachers who have displayed symbols of LGBTQ+ pride at schools, came under fire on social media. In his case, he invited it. Then he got suspended. In a now-deleted Tweet, Gonzales captioned a selfie in front of the flags and referred to Libs of TikTok, a right-wing account on X, formerly known as Twitter, “Hey somebody tell (Libs of TikTok) I put up a progress pride flag in my classroom,” he wrote of the account, popular for its political commentary and anti-LGBTQ sentiment. “What’re they going to do about it. Cry?” The account, which has amassed more than 2 million followers for its political commentary and anti-LGBTQ+ sentiment, posted a screenshot of the Tweet claiming that Gonzales hung the flag to “indoctrinate kids with gender ideology.” Thousands responded, condemning the choice of wall decor, throwing insults at the teacher and pronouncing their distaste for the pride emblem in general. “I would never allow my child anywhere near this classroom and more people shouldn’t,” one user wrote. An Edgewood ISD spokesperson said Gonzales was technically an employee of a nonprofit network called Learn4Life that manages an Edgewood school under a partnership agreement. The district entered into the arrangement in 2021 to serve Edgewood ISD high school students who are credit deficient or at risk of dropping out. The district issued a statement saying it “understands” that Learn4Life had placed Gonzales on leave with pay and was handling “all personnel issues.” It said Edgewood ISD does not discriminate based on gender identity and strives to provide an inclusive environment, but noted that the district does not allow educators to express their “personal or political viewpoints” in the classroom to prevent distractions from learning, and a pride flag would be such an expression. Gonzales — who has since deleted his Twitter account — could not be reached. According to his LinkedIn account, he has worked at the school district since 2021. Many conservatives view the pride flag as a political statement and resent schoolchildren’s exposure to it. Some called the display a violation of state law. The heated debate comes months after the Texas Senate passed a sweeping public education bill that would have barred classroom lessons, activities and discussions about sexual orientation and gender identity in all public and charter schools up to 12th grade. Opponents of the bill said it was inspired by Florida’s “Don’t Say Gay” law and would threaten the safety and livelihood of LGBTQ+ individuals by isolating them and fueling a rise in discriminatory rhetoric. It’s unclear if a pride flag constitutes a lesson or discussion of sexual orientation as defined by the bill. The Texas Education Code doesn’t contain any prohibition against flying a pride flag in a classroom, but it does require schools and educational institutions to prominently display the Texas and United States flags — the latter of which was pictured in Gonzales’ original post. An earlier version of this story incorrectly described Gonzales' initial post challenging Libs of Tik Tok as a response to criticism on that account. https://www.expressnews.com/news/education/article/edgewood-isd-pride-fla g-twitter-18287609.php
