There's another explanation that actually fits what we are seeing. According to people who engineer viral weapons they are not as stable as natural viruses. So it could have started out very virulent then broke down to become less so. That is what we are seeing maybe that's the answer.

Or the opposite. Mutations are arbitrary, so they can cause changes either way.

Anyway, the global situation is what it is, no matter if it was engineered or not.
Are there people in this world having the means and the motives to do something like this ? I think the answer is yes. This would be the same ones building nuclear weapons and such.
But this does not change the situation in any way imho.
