        Nana  (in Italian, etc.)  means  Grandmother.
               I think it was used in Joyce household.



Nanu! ----- could also be Jp, (the same meaning as German)

The single word nanu is an actual German word.

1. The Real German Word (Nanu)

In German, nanu is a common interjection. It doesn't mean hello or
goodbye; instead, it is an exclamation of surprise, puzzlement, or mild
confusion.

It translates roughly to: "Oh?", "Well now!", "Huh?", or "What's this?".

For example, if a German speaker can't find their keys where they just
left them, they might say: 


        ------"Nanu? Wo sind meine Schlüssel?"     ("Huh? Where are my
keys?")
