One worked outside the home most of her life (grandpa sort of abandoned the family during WWII which is why grandma got a divorce... not widely publicized in that era.) The other grandmother didn't drive simply because she had no interest in doing so. She was tired out from taking care of the children and cooking all day. Grandpa drove her anywhere she wanted to go. :) Both grandmothers did walk a few blocks to the grocery store together to go shopping since they lived next door to each other. My mother's and MIL's generation were born just after the end of WW1.
My MIL mother and aunts all worked full time during WW2. My mother
worked as a nurse and her sisters were all conscripted into the RAF and
Land Army. MIL worked in a factory.

In December 1941 the UK government passed the National Service Act
(No 2), which made provision for the conscription of women. At first
only childless widows and single women 20 to 30 years old were called
up, but later the age limit was expanded to 19 to 43 (50 for WWI
veterans).
The WRNS, having been disbanded at the end of WWI, were reformed in
April 1939. WRNS were posted to every home and overseas naval unit.
There were 72,000 serving WRNS in 1945. Another service disbanded after
WW1 was the WAAC, they were reformed as the Auxiliary Territorial
Service (ATS) and totalled over 190,000. Other military organisations
included Women in Air Transport Auxiliary (ATA) and the First Aid
Nursing Yeomanry (FANY), originally formed in 1907.
Times had moved on and along with, still vital, clerical and domestic
duties, women were driving and maintaining vehicles, manning anti-
aircraft guns and RADAR stations, ferrying aircraft from factories to
airfields, deciphering coded German messages in secret naval
communications units and working as spies in the Special Operations
Executive (SOE)
As part of the conscription requirement women had to chose whether to
enter the armed forces or work in farming or industry. By December 1943
one in three factory workers was female and they were building planes,
tanks, guns and making bullets needed for the war.
One civilian choice open to women was to join The Women's Land Army, set
up in June 1939. At its peak in 1943, there were over 80,000 'Land
Girls'. The women undertook hard farm work including ploughing, turning
hay, lifting potatoes, threshing, lambing and poultry management. Six
thousand women worked in the Timber Corps, felling trees and running
sawmills."
Even the Queen, then an 18-year-old princess, joined the Women?s
Auxiliary Territorial Service during World War II and trained in London
as a mechanic and military truck driver.

Walking (round trip) 1.5 miles can seriously reduce your fluid content, depending on heat and humidity. I use a bike or a car so it's no problem to me.

Just like the Queen, she drove army vehicles during the war, not overseas though. My aunts, all seven of them, went into the WRNS and only one of those was considerably younger than my mother, she has just died at 94. She was the one who had the most responsible job, she was a plotter and had to listen to the radio and move the ships or vehicles wherever they should be on the boards, it really mattered that she understood navigation to do it. After the war she worked in a family planning clinic and was much appreciated in her job. My grandmother was a great supporter of Marie Stopes (I had a total of 16 uncles and aunts on her side lol) and did her best to open a clinic in her area. I hasten to add, she did not support the eugenics ideas of Stopes. She also marched for Votes for Women, so I think the idea that all women stayed home, pandering to their men folk is spurious at best. Many times too, back then, just housework was incredibly hard work, machines have eased that somewhat. So there are more exceptions!

The law is for distracted driving and also covers eating and personal grooming, reading etc. The personal grooming part was not in place when a couple of years ago, a young woman, on her way to work, was putting on her makeup crossed the median and crashed head-on into a gravel lorry.
