#113315 — OT: Harris vs. Trump

Well, it was abundantly clear just how deranged Trump is, after watching
the debate. Flawed that the 'debate' was. After both Trump and Harris
were not pushed on their responses. Trump, for instance, was not asked
PRECISELY how he planned to end the Russian invasion of Ukraine.

That said, Harris is likely to gain the popular vote, but the
Republicans have severely compromised the Electoral College system, such
that a Trump victory is highly likely. I fear for Ukraine should the
convicted criminal, Trump, be re-elected.

Never mind the stakes, here's the current Republican strategy:

**It would seem that immigrants eating pets fits that definition very
nicely.

Nonetheless, the corruption of the Electoral College continues unabated.

Yes. the structural problems are ongoing. Both of the last two
presidential elections turned on small numbers of voters in swing states
despite large popular vote leads.

Perhaps the population threshold for admission to the union could have
been higher in the past.

**Well, it seems a better system could be devised. Ours seems to work
quite well. However, voting is compulsory over here. Which people really
don't seem to mind too much. And, like the US, voting irregularities are
virtually non-existent. That said, voting, in Australia, seems to be
rather different to the US system. The 'Democracy sausage' is a common
sight at most polling booths. Usually, the BBQ is operated by a
charitable group, such as Rotary or The Lions and a nice time is had by
most.

Is George still around? Everyone seems to have disappeared.

All the regulars are gone. Setting up a Usenet account was presumably a
bridge too far for many.

**Well, that's a bit sad. I loved talking TV with George and I loved
listening to Scotty's ever increasingly insane defence of Donald.

How are you doing?

Things are thankfully uneventful. I second the tv recs from George. I'd
like to ask him about Slow Horses, Troppo, Professor T, etc.

Music-wise, I enjoy my wife's piano trio in live performance and for
recordings, multichannel reissues from the seventies.

**I finished the second season of Troppo some time ago. Unusual series.
There's another new one, which is OK, but, for me, holds particular
interest, as it is filmed in one of my favourite places, about 30 mins
South of where I live.

**Sadly, I don't have the opportunity to listen to much live classic
music. However, a couple of months back, I attended this concert:

https://www.aco.com.au/whats-on/2024/the-lark-ascending

It was fabulous. I was left of centre, three rows from the stage. It was
wonderful to calibrate my ears with actual, live, unamplified music. And
yes, the sharp-eyed might have noticed the blonde woman at the front is
carrying and plays a Stradivarius. I don't think I've ever heard a Strad
played live before.

I am determined to listen to much more in the future.

I'd watch that. Local flavor helps. I saw a couple of Tasmanian set
shows: The Kettering Incident with Elizabeth Debicki way before The
Crown; and I came to enjoy Deadloch after starting it last year.

A popular and beautiful work, not lacking for good recordings. I've
heard great instruments played by visiting soloists (Midori and Gil
Shaham, for two examples) at the symphony and even a Guarneri closer up
in a chamber setting.
