#500109 — Honor Harrington and the Aeslin Mice

FromJ. Clarke <jclarke.873638@gmail.com>

SubjectHonor Harrington and the Aeslin Mice
Message-ID<tlatrdprsgk298av6gi55f9j4330vbji7d@4ax.com>
Finished up "Uncompromising Honor" last night. Weber finally had some
action on the various wars that are in progress. Once again thousands
and thousands of multiple drive missiles make clear to the Queen's
enemies that they screwed up real bad.

So over dinner tonight I started "Discount Armageddon, An InCryptid
Novel", which opens with “I really don’t think you should put your
hand inside the manticore, dear. You don’t know where it’s been.”

I sprayed soda all over everything and then nearly choked to death
laughing. Left the waitress a big tip for having to clean up the
mess.

Good advice for The People's Republic of Haven, The Mesan Alignment,
The Solarian League, and I forget who all else has gotten hammered in
the 25 years that Honor Harrington has been rampaging through the
enemies of Manticore.

OK, the Aeslin Mice don't figure much in the above remarks, but I
can't help thinking that "Keep that up and I'll get a pulser-armed
treecat" (Stinker learns to shoot in this one) is a more dire threat
to the Aeslin Mice than "Keep that up and I'll get a cat".

The dire threat to the Aeslin Mice is the Covenant of St. George.
But you knew that. I don't know how the Healy/Price clan go
about protecting their Mice (who are, note, a seriously
endangered species) from cats. Perhaps they get their cats in as
kittens and teach them that the Mice are their friends? I have
seen pictures of cats cuddling up to gerbils, guinea pigs, and
parakeets. Not to mention innumerable dogs and cats cuddling up
to each other. It's all in how one is brought up.

ObCats-and-Mice: Breaking Cat News, in which the cats outnumber
the People, and which features five Robber Mice who eventually
reform.

The artist rebooted the series from start a year or so ago, and has
been re-using some material. The Robber Mice have not shown up
yet. Here's the current strip, from which you can go back to the
beginning if you like:

Actually I didn't. I am about 20 pages into my first encounter with
them and so far they have created sufficient chaos for their roomate
that she has threatened to obtain a cat, which is not to be used as a
burnt offering. Thus the notion of Nimitz with pulser. Much less
likely to be successfully used as a burnt offering than an ordinary
cat.

Does your book have the pictures of the Aeslin mice ? They wear armor
and have spears.

Yes, that was part of the description. I don't think that it would
help when dealing with a treecat armed with Manticoran military
weapons.

No, but it would give an ordinary _Felis domesticus_ paw^h^h^hpause.

That's my point--the cat was being used as a threatened disciplinary
measure. I think that Nimitz would be a more effective threatened
disciplinary measure, however when a joke has had this much
explanation it ceases to be worth the effort.

Hey, if Walt Simonson could turn The Mighty Thor into a frog,
and get a decent story...

One fan saw it as an homage to the Greek:

"Battle of Frogs and Mice"

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Batrachomyomachia

ObFandom: Simonson's STAR SLAMMERS artwork began as a part
of the eventually successful DisCon II bid by WSFA.

Putting a word in front of "armor" doesn't make the armor magic. I
doubt that any armore that can be carried by a mouse would be
effective against a weapon that can kill an armored human.

Ablative armor works by sacrificing itself. The major use is
heat-shields where the time interval over which it needs to function
can be well-defined.

No. But it could make a cat* think twice about attacking the
armed and armoured mouse.

And Honor Harrington's cat, which has successfully attacked armed
humans on several occasions. And that was _before_ he started packing
heat.

From everything I know about her treecat, which is damn little,
it has more paws and more intelligence. It would attack an armed
human because it knew it could take one out. The brain-damaged
cat would attack an armed human because it didn't know any
better.

Can't argue with any of that. Reminds of a cat I knew. There was one
person on Earth who that cat loved and who could submit it to all
manner of indignities. Anybody else seeing it coming would cross the
street to avoid getting in attack range.

Gosh. Reminds me of somebody who used to post on USENET (no
names). I once said of him, "He is the neighborhood pit bull,
who if he sees me will savage me." I would never have compared
him to a cat.
