Did they (either of them) inherit that name, or did they decide
"Well, making one take the other's name is old-fashioned and
sexist, and hyphens are awkward, let's just make up a new joint
name"? I knew at least one young young couple who did that. But
they chose something like Moonbeam or Morninglory. It was, after
all, the sixties.

The two of them made the name up - their pre-marriage names were much more
mundane.

Like those two I mentioned upthread.

Then there's the saga of how my son and daughter-in-law dealt
with name change,

Are you all sitting comfortably?

Then I'll begin.

Note: I'm using real names here.

My son was christened David Ravn Heydt. (Ravn being part of the
surname of his father's maternal grandfather, Jo/rgen Jensen
Ravn-Jo/rgensen.)

In his teens he decided that he was tired of being named David;
everybody and his cousin David was named David. By that time he
was active in the SCA (so were all of us), and his medieval name
was Tristan av Ravnsborg. So he started calling himself Tristan,
and we all obliged. Tris for short.

After going through the usual succession of girl friends in his
twenties (who to my eyes all looked alike: small, dark-haired,
and full of Attitude), he settled on one and they got engaged.

Her name was Erika Fitton, but she was an actress and had chosen
to use her mother's maiden name as her stage name: Erika Salazar.
(Some of her family had come from Colombia a generation or two
ago.) She had wanted for some time to change it legally, but
there was a fee and she didn't have the money.

"No sweat," said Tris. "I have the money; I'll change MY name to
Salazar and then when we get married, all you'll have to do is
fill out a form."

(He did ask us if we minded. We didn't.)

So now he's legally Tristan Ravn Salazar, and it was all fine
except then they moved to New York and when he got a job there,
he had to document his name change, and Hal had to go to the San
Francisco records office and get the documentation. No problem.

They have a son now, Ydris Ravn Salazar, and they spell it with a
Y instead of the usual I, because they didn't want him to have
IRS as initials and freak people out.

Eh. I have two books by Donald Aamodt.

Dave, and of course Aaronovitch writes the Rivers of London magic-detective
 series

I've just read probably too much in Google Books's
copy of _Mathematical Adventures for Students and Amateurs_
- or perhaps not enough - of an essay by notable
mathematician Joseph Gallian, upon "Breaking Driver's
Licence Codes" (in Minnesota). It turned out that
a Minnesota licence number encodes the name and date of
birth of the holder - which I expect are on the licence
anyway - and you can extract the name from the number -
most times, but that doesn't work when the name is Zzyzz.

Unfortunately, another Google Books result tells me
that the full name that I had in mind - Ricardo Zzyzz -
appeared at the end of "the" Los Angeles phone directory
in the 1950s - and in some "well-I-never" newspaper
stories - but was just a prank by a subscriber whose
money I guess they were happy to take.

So apparently that leaves Zzyxx...?
