Cruz doesn't even bother to keep up the disguise very well. Nor do McConnell

cf. Bloom County strip from 1980. (or was it '84?) Milo & Co.
are holding the Meadow Party convention in a sketchy hotel in
the Tenderloin a couple of blocks from the Moscone Center where
the DNC is having their convention. Some befuddled Democratic
delegate wanders into the Meadown Party convention by accident.

"Meadow party, huh? Who are you guys running?"

"A penguin and a dead cat."

(DNC delegate looks in the direction of Moscone for a moment.)

"Aw, what the hell", and puts on a Meadow Party hat.

When a localized version was broadcast in Quito Ecuador in 1949, there
*was* a panic, which, when the mob realized it had been fooled, turned
into a riot. The rioters attacked the radio station, and seven people died.

Thanks for that info, Dorothy, I've been wanting to get a DVD of this

Guess I'll have to start looking (again!!) at the Australian DVD

In 1949, a localized version was broadcast in Quito, Ecuador. It let to a
panic, with police and fire departments being mobilized. When it was revealed
as a hoax, the panic turned into a riot, the station was attacked, and there
were at least 7 deaths.

I'm also in Australia and the last time I was in the market for a DVD/BluRay player, about three years ago, I noticed it was almost impossible to buy a player that didn't play multi region DVDs and NTSC. If yours doesn't play North American stuff, it must be a really old model.

The player I have is part of my computer (about 3 years old,
running Win7). I have one DVD that's coded for the UK and I
can't play it.  Or at least, the last time I tried, I couldn't;
that may have been a different computer. I'll try again some
time.

I think America has more enforcement, and Australia has
more need to play imported videos.

DVD discs can be manufactured play-anywhere or multi-where
by setting digits in one binary byte, so whoever made your
disc sat down and deliberately decided to stop you from
playing it. With the help of the technologists who made
DVD players to work that way in the first place.

Although, back in the day, we also had completely
incompatible TV sets. But on a computer, that probably
doesn't matter any more.

And, in fact, many DVD players, and computer DVD drives,
can be commanded with some secret spell to ignore the
region byte. Or, that used to be so. Like, switch it on
while holding the remote control upside down... or nearly
that odd.

Well, if you find out how to do it on a PC using Win7, do let me
know. Note that the computer doesn't have a remote control. :)

Used to be, some drives had an option to change the region if you
went into the hardware drivers. The computer I'm on right now will
allow that - but only five times. I belive there are contractual
restrictions in the US on this related to the use of the patents and
trademarks associated with the DVD specs.
